Lesson: Wiederholung — Wechselpräpositionen

Topic: review the fixed-case prepositions (Akkusativ-only, Dativ-only), then drill the nine two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen) — in, auf, an, unter, über, vor, hinter, zwischen, neben — with the Wo? → Dativ / Wohin? → Akkusativ test and the matching pairs of position vs. movement verbs (liegen/legen, stehen/stellen, sitzen/setzen, hängen/hängen).

Lernziele (Learning goals)

  1. Sicher the Akkusativ-only and Dativ-only prepositions — recognise and use them without thinking.
  2. Explain what a Wechselpräposition is and apply the Wo?/Wohin? rule to pick the case correctly.
  3. Pair the right position verb (liegen, stehen, sitzen, hängen) or movement verb (legen, stellen, setzen, hängen) with the right case.

1. The opening dialogue — the rule in 30 seconds

Anne: Wohin hast du mein Geld gelegt? ← Wohin? → Akkusativ
Jeremy: Ich habe das Geld auf den Tisch gelegt. (auf + den = Akk.)
Anne: Das Geld liegt auf dem Tisch? ← Wo? → Dativ
Jeremy: Ja, genau. (auf + dem = Dat.)

The same preposition (auf) appears twice with two different articles (den vs. dem) because the case tracks the question, not the preposition. Wohin? = direction = Akkusativ. Wo? = location = Dativ. Two cases, two verbs (legen — to put; liegen — to lie), one dialogue.

2. Review — prepositions that always take Akkusativ

These six never change case. They take Akkusativ regardless of meaning.

PräpositionEnglishBeispielsatz
bisuntil / up toDer Zug fährt bis Frankfurt.
durchthroughDer Zug fährt durch den Tunnel.
fürforDer Kaffee ist für dich.
ohnewithoutOhne dich macht die Schule keinen Spaß!
gegenagainstDu bist gegen eine Partei.
umaround / at (time)Er geht um das Haus.
Mnemonic. DOGFUB — durch, ohne, gegen, für, um, bis. Memorize as one block; once memorized, you never need to think about case after them.

For the full list (also includes entlang when post-positioned) see cases.md → Akkusativ Triggers.

3. Review — prepositions that always take Dativ

These never change case either. They always take Dativ.

PräpositionEnglishBeispielsatz
zuto (a person/place)Sie fährt zum Arzt. (zu + dem = zum)
mitwithIhr habt mit ihm zu Abend gegessen.
beiat / with / chezEr ist beim Frisör. (bei + dem = beim)
vonfrom / of / byEr kommt von der Arbeit.
nachafter / to (a country/city)Ich mache nach der Schule meine Hausaufgaben.
ausout of / from (origin)Sie kommen aus dem Supermarkt.
abfrom (a point in time)Ab diesem Moment war alles klar.
seitsince / for (duration up to now)Seit einem Jahr lebe ich in Köln.
Mnemonic. aus-bei-mit-nach-seit-von-zu — recite as a single chant. Add ab and gegenüber for completeness. See cases.md → Dativ Triggers.

Contractions to memorize

Long formShort formUsed?
zu + demzumalways
zu + derzuralways
bei + dembeimalways
von + demvomalways
in + demimalways (also a Wechselpräposition contraction)
in + dasinsalways (Akkusativ side)
an + demamalways
an + dasansalways
auf + dasaufscommon, especially in fixed phrases

The contractions are not optional in speech — saying zu dem Arzt sounds wrong.

4. Quick classifier — which case?

Three diagnostic exercises from the lesson, with the reasoning made explicit.

1. Rowan geht ___ der Arbeit einkaufen. → nach (Dat.) — "after work" temporal
2. Ich bin ___ einer Freundin. → bei (Dat.) — "at a friend's place"
3. Ich freue mich ___ dich. Endlich Job! → für (Akk.) — "I'm happy for you"
Trap on #3. sich freuen takes two different prepositions with two meanings: sich freuen auf (+ Akk.) = to look forward to (something future); sich freuen über (+ Akk.) = to be happy about (something present/past); sich freuen für (+ Akk.) = to be happy for (someone). The lesson uses für dich — happy for the other person. See feelings_and_emotions.md → Adjective+Preposition for the full sich freuen family.

5. The nine Wechselpräpositionen

These are the heart of the lesson. The nine prepositions take either Akkusativ or Dativ depending on whether the phrase describes a direction (Wohin?) or a location (Wo?).

PräpositionEnglish (basic)Wohin? (Akk.)Wo? (Dat.)
One memorization trick. an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen — say them in the same order every time, ideally alphabetically by their position word in English (at-on-behind-in-next to-over-under-in front of-between). The nine never grow or shrink.

The rule itself

QuestionCaseMeaningVerb family
Wohin?AkkusativDirection / motion toward a goallegen, stellen, setzen, hängen, gehen, fahren, fliegen, laufen
Wo?DativLocation / position at a placeliegen, stehen, sitzen, hängen, sein, wohnen, arbeiten
The slogan. Direction → Akkusativ (something changes). Location → Dativ (something is). If you can ask "wohin?" and get a sensible answer, use Akkusativ. If "wo?" fits, use Dativ.

See cases.md → Two-Way Prepositions for the same rule in cases-grammar context.

6. Sätze bilden — case-sorting practice

Take each of the nine cards from the lesson and decide the case first, then build a sentence. The point is to internalize that the case is decided before you open your mouth.

KarteAlways Akk. / Always Dat. / WechselBeispielsatz
Note: none of the nine cards in this exercise are Wechselpräpositionen — the exercise tests whether you can sort the fixed-case group cleanly before the lesson layers Wechsel on top.

Akkusativ-oder-Dativ sorting (slide 8 sentences)

SatzPräpositionKasusWarum
Ich fahre mit dem Fahrrad durch den Wald.mit / durchDat. / Akk.mit is always Dat.; durch is always Akk.

7. Lokale Präpositionen — picture identification

Match the cube-and-ball pictures to the right Wechselpräposition:

Picture (cube + ball)PräpositionEnglish
ball beside the cubenebennext to
ball below the cubeunterunder
ball touching the cube's sideanat / on (vertical)
ball to the left of the cubenebennext to (the same word, mirrored)
ball on top of the cubeaufon
ball to the right of the cubeneben / annext to / at

The lesson set used all six of: neben, unter, an, vor, auf, hinter. The visual exercise is a calibration check — if you can't picture vor, hinter, neben, unter, auf spatially, the case rule won't save you.

The hardest pair. an vs. auf. Auf = resting on a horizontal surface (book on table). An = touching a vertical surface or a line (picture on wall, sitting at the table, on the wall). Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch but das Bild hängt an der Wand.

8. Spezielle Verben — the position/movement verb pairs

This is the second half of the lesson and the part most learners get wrong. German has paired verbs — one weak/transitive verb for "putting something somewhere" (Wohin? + Akk.) and one strong/intransitive verb for "being somewhere" (Wo? + Dat.).

Position (Wo? + Dat.)Movement (Wohin? + Akk.)Pair logic
liegen (lag, gelegen) — to lielegen (legte, gelegt) — to lay/put flatflat objects
stehen (stand, gestanden) — to standstellen (stellte, gestellt) — to stand/put uprightvertical objects
sitzen (saß, gesessen) — to sitsich setzen (setzte, gesetzt) — to sit oneself downliving beings / reflexive
hängen (hing, gehangen) — to hang (intrans.)hängen (hängte, gehängt) — to hang (trans.)same infinitive, different conjugation pattern

Side-by-side from the lesson

Ort (Dat.)Richtung (Akk.)
Ich liege im Bett.Ich lege mich in das Bett.
Das Glas steht auf dem Küchentisch.Ich stelle das Glas auf den Küchentisch.
Er sitzt auf dem Sofa.Er setzt sich auf das Sofa.
Das Bild hängt an der Wand.Wir hängen das Bild an die Wand.
Why the pair exists. German splits the "being there" verb from the "putting there" verb so that the verb itself carries the Wohin/Wo signal. If you hear stellen, you already know Akkusativ is coming, before you reach the noun. If you hear steht, Dativ is coming. The verb pre-announces the case.

The two hängen — the trap

The same infinitive hängen covers both verbs. They are distinguished by their past forms:

Position (intrans.)Movement (trans.)
PräsensDas Bild hängt an der Wand. (Dat.)Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. (Akk.)
PräteritumDas Bild hing an der Wand. (strong)Ich hängte das Bild an die Wand. (weak)
Partizip IIgehangen (with sein/haben — region-dependent)gehängt (with haben)

In the present tense the only signal that disambiguates is the case of the object/complement.

Welches Verb passt? — slide 14 drill

SatzLösungWarum
Der Teller ___ auf dem Tisch.liegtflat object + Wo? (dem Tisch is Dat.) → position verb for flat
Die Lampe ___ an der Decke.hängtsuspended + Wo? (der Decke is Dat.) → position hängen
Johanna ___ sich auf das Sofa.setztreflexive + Wohin? (das Sofa is Akk.) → movement sich setzen
Der Baum ___ im Garten.stehtvertical living thing + Wo? (im Garten = in dem) → position stehen
Position rule of thumb. Liegen for things that are flat or horizontal (plate, book, towel, paper). Stehen for things that are upright (glass, lamp, tree, building). Sitzen for people, animals, and things that "have a seat" (the cup sitzt in its saucer). Hängen for things suspended (picture, jacket on a hook, lamp from the ceiling).

9. Welcher Kasus ist das? — quick test

Read each sentence and decide Akk. or Dat. The signal is the verb combined with the bolded article.

SatzKasusWhy
Ich stelle die Schuhe vor die Tür.Akk.stellen = movement; die Tür is fem. Akk. (same as Nom. but the movement verb confirms it)
Erika sitzt auf dem Stuhl.Dat.sitzen = position; dem Stuhl is masc. Dat.
Du hängst die Gardinen an das Fenster.Akk.hängen trans. = movement; das Fenster is neut. Akk.
Ich lege mich auf das Bett.Akk.legen = movement; das Bett is neut. Akk.
Er steht im Garten.Dat.stehen = position; im = in dem (Dat.)

The article alone often doesn't disambiguate (fem./neut. nominative looks like accusative). The verb does the work — that's why German split the verb families in the first place.

10. Reading — Mias Büro (slide 15)

A model paragraph in which every clause uses a Wechselpräposition with the right verb-case pair. Worth re-reading aloud once you've internalized the rules above.

Comprehension — answer Wo? or Wohin? for each

QuestionAnswerCase used
Wo stehen der Schreibtisch und der Stuhl?Sie stehen mitten im Raum.Dat. (Wo? + stehen)
Wohin hängt sie die Bilder?Sie hängt die Bilder an die Wand.Akk. (Wohin? + trans. hängen)
Wohin hängt sie ein Regal?Sie hängt ein Regal an die Wand.Akk. (Wohin? + trans. hängen)
Wo steht das andere Regal? — actually Wohin stellt sieSie stellt es neben den Schreibtisch.Akk. (Wohin? + stellen)
Wohin stellt sie die Pflanze?Sie stellt die Pflanze auf den Schreibtisch.Akk. (Wohin? + stellen)
Pattern to extract. Every time Mia acquires an object and puts it somewhere, the verb is stellen / hängen / legen and the preposition takes Akkusativ. Every time we ask where something is, the verb is stehen / hängen (intrans.) / liegen and the preposition takes Dativ. The narrative does both, in alternation — that's why the paragraph is a perfect drill.

11. Speaking — Aufräumen (slide 17)

The desk is a mess. Describe the cleanup using movement verbs + Akkusativ.

Sentence frameLikely completion
Ich werfe das Papier in den Mülleimer.(trash → into the bin)
Ich bringe den Teller …… in die Küche.
Ich lege …… die Stifte in die Schublade. / … die Bücher auf das Regal.
Ich stelle …… die Kaffeetasse auf den Tisch. / … die Lampe neben den Bildschirm.
Ich hänge …… die Jacke an den Haken.

Every sentence is Wohin? → Akkusativ because we are moving things. If you accidentally use Dativ here, the listener will picture you describing a static scene rather than tidying up.

Cleanup verbs (incidental vocab)

VerbEnglishCase after preposition
werfen (warf, geworfen)to throw+ Akk. (Wohin?)
bringen (brachte, gebracht)to bring/take+ Akk. (Wohin?)
legento lay (flat)+ Akk. (Wohin?)
stellento stand/put upright+ Akk. (Wohin?)
hängen (trans.)to hang up+ Akk. (Wohin?)
aufräumen (sep.)to tidy updirect object in Akk.

12. Common mistakes

✗ Falsch✓ RichtigWhy
The drill that fixes most of these. Speak the verb first, then ask Wohin? or Wo? out loud, and only then pick the article. The order matters: verb → question → case → article. Reversing the order (article first, verb second) is what causes the errors.

13. So sagt man das — neben sich stehen

A figurative use of neben (+ Dat., position): to be beside oneself, in the sense of being unable to concentrate or function.

Heute im Meeting konnte ich mich nicht konzentrieren. Ich habe total neben mir gestanden.
(In today's meeting I couldn't focus. I was completely out of it.)
ElementNote
neben mirneben + Dat. of ich = mir — position (you "stand beside yourself," static metaphor)
gestandenPartizip II of stehen (strong: stand, gestanden) — auxiliary haben in standard German
Registercolloquial-neutral, very common in self-reports about brain fog or fatigue

Compare with the lesson's other figurative neben expression: neben der Spur sein (lit. "to be next to the track") = to be off one's game.

14. Redewendung — etwas an die große Glocke hängen

etwas an die große Glocke hängen — to broadcast something publicly, to make a fuss about it (lit. to hang something on the big bell).

Bedeutung: etwas öffentlich erzählen

— Hast du schon gehört? Marian hat gekündigt.
— Ich weiß, aber musst du das so an die große Glocke hängen? Ich glaube, sie wollte das noch nicht erzählen.

The idiom is built on the lesson's grammar: an + die Glocke — hängen (trans., movement) + Akk. The image is of a town crier ringing the big church bell to spread news. The negative connotation is built in — to hang something on the big bell implies the news wasn't yours to spread.

Connection to the lesson
an die GlockeWechselpräposition an + Akk. (Wohin?) because hängen here is the transitive movement verb
hängenthe trans. hängen (weak: hängte, gehängt), not the intransitive hängen (strong: hing, gehangen)
Culturalbell-ringing as the pre-newspaper broadcast medium — same image lives in English to ring something from the rooftops

15. Cheat-sheet — one screen

ALWAYS Akkusativ (DOGFUB): durch, ohne, gegen, für, um, bis
ALWAYS Dativ: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, ab (+ gegenüber)

WECHSEL (9): in, auf, an, unter, über, vor, hinter, zwischen, neben
 Wohin? → AKK (direction)
 Wo? → DAT (location)

PAIRED VERBS:
liegen / legen — flat things (lie / lay)
 stehen / stellen — upright things (stand / put-upright)
sitzen / sich setzen — beings (sit / sit oneself down)
hängen / hängen — suspended things (intrans. strong / trans. weak)

CONTRACTIONS: im=in dem · ins=in das · am=an dem · ans=an das
 zum=zu dem · zur=zu der · beim=bei dem · vom=von dem

DIAGNOSTIC ORDER: verb → Wohin?/Wo? → case → article
