Über Sport und Freizeit sprechen
Topic: Sprechen — the Sprechen capstone of the 110x cluster (after Das Verb lassen and Adjektivendungen). Two genuinely new pieces: the Aussprache von f, v, w (when v sounds like f and when it sounds like w), and a Sport & Freizeit conversation unit that deliberately recycles vocabulary and grammar from across A2 (lassen, temporale Adverbien, opinion frames, Sport treiben) into one integrated speaking module.

Lesson: Über Sport und Freizeit sprechen
Topic: Sprechen — the Sprechen capstone of the 110x cluster (after Das Verb lassen and Adjektivendungen). Two genuinely new pieces: the Aussprache von f, v, w (when v sounds like f and when it sounds like w), and a Sport & Freizeit conversation unit that deliberately recycles vocabulary and grammar from across A2 (lassen, temporale Adverbien, opinion frames, Sport treiben) into one integrated speaking module.
Lernziele (Learning goals)
- Ich kann mich über Sport und Freizeit unterhalten. (I can converse about sport and free time.)
- Ich kann Gewohnheiten in Deutschland mit meinem Heimatland vergleichen. (I can compare habits in Germany with my home country.)
0. Opening word-order anchor
Viel warmes Wasser fließt durch den Fluss.
Durch den Fluss fließt viel warmes Wasser.
(A lot of warm water flows through the river. / Through the river flows a lot of warm water.) Same sentence, two word orders (V2 rule — whatever occupies the Vorfeld, the verb still comes second) — and not coincidentally loaded with every sound this lesson is about: viel and Wasser (the letter v and the letter w), fließt and Fluss (the letter f).
1. Die Aussprache von f, v und w
| Fußball | fechten | verlieren | schwimmen | gewinnen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| /ˈfuːsˌbal/ | /ˈfɛçtn̩/ | /fɛɐ̯ˈliːʁən/ | /ˈʃvɪmən/ | /gəˈvɪnən/ |
| (football) | (to fence) | (to lose) | (to swim) | (to win) |
F und v sprechen wir oft gleich aus. Sie werden dann beide wie f gesprochen. (F and v are often pronounced the same. Both are then pronounced like f.) — Fußball and fechten start with the letter f; verlieren starts with the letter v — all three sound identical, /f/.
W ist weicher und stimmhaft. (W is softer and voiced.) — schwimmen and gewinnen both contain w, pronounced /v/ (a voiced sound, unlike the voiceless /f/) — this is the classic trap for English speakers, since English w is a completely different sound (like German u), while German w is what English speakers hear as "v."
Aussprache — practice & recall
Sprich die Wörter richtig aus. Welche Wörter mit f, w und v kennst du noch? Zähle auf. (Pronounce the words correctly. What other words with f, w, and v do you know? List them.)
Gewinner (winner), verlieren (to lose), wie viel (how much/many), Winter (winter), feiern (to celebrate), Freizeit (free time), wissen (to know), Verein (club, association), zufrieden (content, satisfied).
2. Achtung, aufgepasst! — loanwords are different
Lies die Wörter und ordne sie den Kategorien zu. (Read the words and sort them into the categories.) Überlege dann: Ist dieser Satz richtig? Bei Fremdwörtern spricht man das v am Wortanfang und im Wortinneren wie ein w, am Wortende wie ein f. (Then consider: is this sentence correct? "In loanwords, the v is pronounced like a w at the start of the word and in the middle of the word, like an f at the end of the word.")
| Wortanfang (word-start, → w) | Wortinneres (mid-word, → w) | Wortende (word-end, → f) |
|---|---|---|
| vertikal (vertical) | Advent (Advent) | definitiv (definitive) |
| virtuell (virtual) | Pullover (sweater) | Adjektiv (adjective) |
| Vase (vase) | Klavier (piano) | |
| Version (version) | ||
| Ventil (valve) |
Ja, der Satz ist richtig. (Yes, the statement is correct.) In loanwords (Fremdwörter), v at the start or in the middle of the word is pronounced /v/ (like w); only at the end of the word does it become /f/.
Eine Geschichte
Überlege dir eine Geschichte. Verwende die Wörter. (Think up a story. Use the words.) Mia geht jeden Morgen zum Strand. Was macht sie da? Warum macht sie es am Strand? Was macht sie danach? (Mia goes to the beach every morning. What does she do there? Why does she do it at the beach? What does she do afterward?) Word bank: Wasser (water), laufen (to run/walk), Fitness (fitness), früh (early), aufstehen (to get up), Frühstück (breakfast), Wetter (weather), Wohnung (apartment), vorbereiten (to prepare). Open storytelling task.
W oder f?
Ordne zu. (Sort them.) These words all contain the letter v — but not all loanwords: some are native/fully-assimilated German words, which always pronounce v as /f/ regardless of position (unlike the loanword-position rule in §2 above).
| v wie f | v wie w |
|---|---|
| Motiv (motif/motive) | Kurve (curve) |
| Volk (folk, people) | Universität (university) |
| brav (well-behaved) | Navigation (navigation) |
| viel (much/many) | Olive (olive) |
| Detektiv (detective) |
Volk and viel are native German words — v is always /f/ in native vocabulary, no matter where it sits in the word (Volk is word-initial and still /f/, breaking the loanword pattern from §2). Motiv, brav, Detektiv are loanwords with v at the word-end, so they follow the same -end-of-word-is-/f/ rule as definitiv/Adjektiv above. Kurve, Universität, Navigation, Olive are loanwords with v inside the word, so they get /v/.
Two rules stacked. (1) Native German word → v is always /f/. (2) Loanword → v is /f/ only at the word's end; elsewhere (start or middle) it's /v/.
3. Sport und Freizeit — Wortschatz-Recycling
Bilde drei Sätze mit Wörtern, die du kennst. (Form three sentences with words you already know.) A word cloud deliberately reactivating vocabulary from across the A2 course: trainieren (to train), gesunde Ernährung (healthy diet), sich erholen (to recover, relax), fit bleiben (to stay fit), Ich lasse … (callback to Das Verb lassen), jeder / mancher / alle (callback to Artikelwörter). Open speaking task.
Was passt? — Fred und Max
Ordne zu. (Match them.)
| Satzanfang | Satzende |
|---|---|
| Fred macht viel Sport, weil | er fit bleiben möchte. (he wants to stay fit) |
| Er trainiert immer abends | im Fitnessstudio. (at the gym) |
| Außerdem achtet Fred auf | eine gesunde Ernährung. (a healthy diet) |
| Nach der Arbeit und dem Training | erholt sich Fred auf dem Sofa. (Fred relaxes on the sofa) |
| Max mag jedes Obst, aber | nicht jedes Gemüse. (not every vegetable) |
4. Sport ist Mord — Meinung äußern
Stimmt das? Stimmt das nicht? Was ist deine Meinung? Begründe. (Is that true? Is that not true? What's your opinion? Justify it.) Opinion frames (callback to Die Meinung sagen): Ich bin dafür/dagegen, dass … / Ich glaube, dass … / Ich bin der Meinung, dass … Open speaking task, prompted by the Redewendung in §7.
Gesunde Ernährung
Frag eine andere Person aus dem Kurs. (Ask another person in the class.) Was bedeutet gesunde Ernährung für dich? Ernährst du dich gesund? Wenn ja, wie? (What does a healthy diet mean to you? Do you eat healthily? If so, how?) Model answers: Gesunde Ernährung ist mir wichtig / nicht so wichtig. (A healthy diet is/isn't very important to me.) Ich esse viel/wenig … Ich trinke viel/wenig … (I eat a lot/little of … I drink a lot/little of …)
Erholung
Beantworte die Fragen. Benutze temporale Adverbien. (Answer the questions. Use temporal adverbs — callback to Temporale Adverbien.)
- Was machst du in deiner Freizeit? (What do you do in your free time?)
- Wie erholst du dich? (How do you relax?)
- Wann erholst du dich? (When do you relax?)
So sagt man das! — abschalten
Ich schalte am besten im Park in der Sonne ab. (I unwind best in the park in the sun.) *Richtig oder falsch? Abschalten bedeutet sich erholen. → richtig (true). Abschalten* (separable, lit. "to switch off," like a device) is a common informal way to say "to unwind, to relax mentally" — a figurative extension of the literal switching-off sense.
5. Comparing habits — Heimatland vs. Deutschland
Und in deinem Heimatland? (And in your home country?) Open speaking prompts: Welche Sportart ist beliebt? Was essen die Menschen? Was machen die Menschen in ihrer Freizeit? (Which sport is popular? What do people eat? What do people do in their free time?)
Und in Deutschland? Was machen die Menschen in Deutschland? Formuliere Fragen an deine Lehrkraft. (What do people in Germany do? Formulate questions for your teacher.) — students generate their own questions to ask the instructor, rather than answering pre-set ones.
6. Einen Tag lang die Macht haben
Wähle eine Situation. Was lässt du andere Personen für dich machen? Was erlaubst du anderen Personen? Formuliere Sätze mit lassen. (Choose a situation. What do you have other people do for you? What do you allow other people? Form sentences with lassen.) Direct callback to Das Verb lassen — reusing the Hilfsverb ("to allow/have done") and reflexive-causative constructions from that lesson.
- Du bist ein reicher und berühmter Sportler / eine reiche und berühmte Sportlerin. (You're a rich and famous athlete.)
- Du bist der Präsident / die Präsidentin in deinem Land. (You're the president of your country.)
- Du bist ein kleines Baby. (You're a small baby.)
In 20 Jahren
Erzähle. (Tell.) Stell dir dein Leben in 20 Jahren vor. Wie ist dein Leben in 20 Jahren? Was bist du von Beruf? Was machst du in deiner Freizeit? (Imagine your life in 20 years. What's your life like in 20 years? What's your profession? What do you do in your free time?) Open speaking task — naturally pulls in Futur I.
7. Redewendung
Sport ist Mord. (lit. "Sport is murder" — a tongue-in-cheek excuse for avoiding exercise.) Bedeutung: Sport ist anstrengend. (Exercise is strenuous/exhausting.)
Hast du Lust, morgen mit mir joggen zu gehen? — Nee, danke. Sport ist Mord! (Do you feel like going jogging with me tomorrow? — No thanks. Exercise is the death of me!)
8. Zusatzübungen

Fragerunde
