Lesson: Temporale Präpositionen — seit, vor, ab, bis, nach

tags: #german #lessons #a2 #grammar #housing #praepositionen #zeit
summary: Kommunikation — the systematic grammar lesson on the five A2 temporal prepositions that already showed up piecemeal in earlier lessons: seit (+ Dat., "since/for" — started in past, continues now), vor (+ Dat., "ago" — completed before now), ab (+ Dat., "starting from" — future onset), bis (+ Akk., "until" — future endpoint), nach (+ Dat., "after" — flexible: Zeitpunkt / Zeitspanne / Vorgang). Anchored on the Lotta-in-Hamburg / Julia-in-Berlin / Alexa-Laufbahn timelines, the Damals speaking task (seit/vor X Jahren), and the Ab wann / Bis wann dialogue. So sagt man das! phrase kurz vor knapp (at the very last moment). Redewendung bis zum Gehtnichtmehr (to excess, ad nauseam). Sits in the housing cluster because the 106x code groups it with Mein Zuhause and most examples involve moving (Ich wohne ab nächstem Monat in München / Vor drei Jahren ist Lotta nach Hamburg gezogen).

Lernziele

  1. Ich kann temporale Präpositionen erkennen und anwenden.
  2. Ich kann in einfachen Worten über zeitliche Abläufe sprechen.

The lesson's anchor — five prepositions in one paragraph

Page 3 wraps every preposition the lesson teaches into a single five-sentence vignette. Every bolded preposition is the target of one of the rule slides that follow:

Ich bin vor 20 Jahren nach Deutschland gekommen. Jetzt lebe ich schon seit acht Jahren in München. Nach meinem Studium möchte ich umziehen. Ich muss noch bis 2026 studieren. Aber ab 2027 werde ich in Hamburg wohnen.

Read it as a five-slot map for the whole lesson:

PhrasePrepositionWhat it does
vor 20 Jahrenvor + Dat.a moment in the past, completed (= 20 years ago)
seit acht Jahrenseit + Dat.duration from past until now, still ongoing
nach meinem Studiumnach + Dat.after an event/period
bis 2026bis + Akk.until a future endpoint
ab 2027ab + Dat.starting from a future onset
Grammar callback: every temporal preposition in this lesson except bis takes Dativ — same as the always-Dat. set learned in 1023G (ab, aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu). Only bis breaks ranks (always-Akk., already in the 1023G set as well). Memorize the case for each preposition individually; the meaning differs from the spatial sense in some cases (nach spatial = "to, toward [city/country]"; nach temporal = "after").

The five-preposition matrix — the lesson on one card

PrepositionCaseTime directionMeaningCanonical example
seit+ Dat.past → nowfor / since (ongoing)Ich warte schon seit 30 Minuten auf dich.
vor+ Dat.finished in past(X time) agoIch konnte erst vor 10 Minuten losgehen.
ab+ Dat.future onsetstarting fromIch wohne ab nächstem Monat in München.
bis+ Akk.future endpointuntilIch muss bis morgen meine Koffer packen.
nach+ Dat.after a Zeitpunkt / Zeitspanne / VorgangafterNach Weihnachten fährt er in den Urlaub.

Visual timelines (from pages 4, 9, 13):

seit: X─────────►NOW (started in past, still going)
vor: (──)X────────NOW (completed at point X in the past)
ab: NOW──────●─────X─────► (begins at future point ●)
bis: NOW─────────X─────► (continues until point X, then ends)
nach: X─────────► (begins after point/event X)

seit vs. vor — the A2 trap

Page 4's two speech bubbles introduce both at once and contrast them on the same axis:

Speaker 1: Ich warte schon seit 30 Minuten auf dich.
Speaker 2: Entschuldige, ich konnte erst vor 10 Minuten losgehen.

Both phrases mention a time span (30 Minuten, 10 Minuten), but the meaning is completely different:

PhraseVisualMeaning
seit 30 MinutenX────►NOW (still waiting)I've been waiting for the past 30 minutes — and I'm still waiting.
vor 10 Minuten(──)X──────NOW (then went)I left 10 minutes ago — the leaving is a completed event.

The rule, sharpened

seit = the action starts in the past and continues into the present. Same span, every second counted.
vor = the action happened at a single point in the past. The action is finished; you're naming when it happened.

English mappings

  • seit drei Jahren = "for three years" / "since three years ago" — ongoing
  • vor drei Jahren = "three years ago" — completed
English-speaker trap: English uses "for" for both seit 3 Jahre AND various other durational phrases. German is strict: if the action is still happening, use seit + Dat. The verb stays in Präsens (NOT Perfekt!): Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren in Berlin (NOT Ich habe seit zwei Jahren gewohnt). German treats the situation as a present-tense state.

Page 5 — Was passt? (seit oder vor)

#SentenceChoicesAnswerWhy
1Maria wohnt _____ zwölf Jahren in München.a. seit b. vora. seitwohnen = ongoing state
2Paolo hat _____ drei Monaten ein Buch geschrieben.a. seit b. vorb. vorPerfekt + finished writing event
3Timo arbeitet _____ 2018 im Krankenhaus.a. seit b. vora. seitarbeitet = ongoing employment
4Rick und Jana sind _____ dem Unterricht spazieren gegangen.a. seit b. vorb. vorfinished walk, before class started — note: vor here = "before" (a different sense, see below)
5Ich bin _____ Montag krank.a. seit b. vora. seitsickness is ongoing since Monday

(Lösungen page 24: 1a; 2b; 3a; 4b; 5a)

Watch item 4: vor dem Unterricht uses vor in its "before" sense — before class started — not "ago." The same preposition serves both: vor + Dat. + time-span = "X ago"; vor + Dat. + event = "before X." Context disambiguates.

Four questions with answers (Lösungen page 24)

FrageAntwort
Wann ist Lotta nach Hamburg gezogen?Vor drei Jahren.
Was braucht Lotta jetzt?Einen Job.
Warum ist sie nach Hamburg gezogen?Wegen ihrem Masterstudium. (colloq.; strict grammar wants Gen.: wegen ihres Masterstudiums)
Seit wann ist sie mit ihrem Master-Studium fertig?Seit einem Jahr.
The seit/vor pairing in the reading is the lesson's most elegant illustration. Three time references stack like Russian dolls:
- Vor vier Jahren — decided to move (one-time decision, completed)
- Vor drei Jahren — moved (one-time event, completed)
- Seit drei Jahren — has been living there (ongoing)
- Vor einem Jahr — submitted thesis (completed)
- Seit einem Jahr — has been done with studies (ongoing)

Notice the symmetry: every action has both a vor-form (when it happened) and a seit-form (its ongoing consequence).
Sub-vocab from the reading:
| Wort | English | Note |
|------|---------|------|
| nun | now (literary/written; = jetzt) | Nun lebt sie schon seit drei Jahren in Hamburg. |
| sich entscheiden (entschied, entschieden) | to decide | Sie hat sich dazu entschieden, nach Hamburg zu ziehen. |
| brauchen + Zeit + um zu | to need X time to | Sie brauchte ein Jahr, um eine Wohnung zu finden. |
| die Masterarbeit, -en | master's thesis | Vor einem Jahr hat sie ihre Masterarbeit eingereicht. |
| einreichen (sep., weak) | to submit (formal) | Sie hat ihre Masterarbeit eingereicht. |
| abschließen (schloss ab, abgeschlossen; sep., strong) | to complete (a degree) | Lotta hat ein Master-Studium abgeschlossen. |
| fertig sein mit + Dat. | to be done with | Sie ist mit ihrem Studium fertig. |
| zum Glück | luckily | Zum Glück hat sie Freunde. |
| unterstützen (insep., weak) | to support | Freunde, die sie unterstützen. |
| wegen + Gen. (colloq. + Dat.) | because of | Wegen ihrem Masterstudium / wegen ihres Masterstudiums. |

Page 7 — So sagt man das!: kurz vor knapp

Lotta, hast du deine Masterarbeit schon abgegeben?
Ja, aber nur 30 Minuten vor der Deadline. Das war echt kurz vor knapp!
richtig oder falsch: Wenn man etwas kurz vor knapp macht, hat man noch viel Zeit vor der Deadline. — falsch (Lösungen page 24).

kurz vor knapp is an idiom meaning "at the very last moment," "with no time to spare," "just barely on time." Literal: "shortly before tight." The two words rhyme (kurz/knapp) which gives the phrase its memorable rhythm.

PartMeaning
kurz vorshortly before
knapptight, scarce, barely enough

Use it whenever you finished something with minutes/seconds to spare:

  • Ich habe den Zug kurz vor knapp erwischt. — I caught the train at the last moment.
  • Die Steuererklärung kam kurz vor knapp rein. — The tax return came in just in the nick of time.

Also note abgeben vs. einreichen in the dialogue: both = "submit." Abgeben (sep., gab ab, abgegeben) is the everyday word — hand in homework, hand in a coat at the cloakroom. Einreichen (sep., reichte ein, eingereicht) is formal — submit a thesis, file paperwork. The page 6 reading uses einreichen (formal context: Masterarbeit); the page 7 dialogue uses abgeben (chat-style register).

Page 8 — Damals (speaking task — seit/vor X Jahren)

Was machst du seit … Jahr(en)? Was hast du vor … Jahr(en) gemacht? Erzähle.

Three timecards: 1 Jahr · 5 Jahren · 10 Jahren.

Template:

Seit einem Jahr arbeite ich bei einer neuen Firma. Vor einem Jahr habe ich meinen alten Job gekündigt.
Seit fünf Jahren wohne ich in dieser Stadt. Vor fünf Jahren bin ich aus meinem Heimatdorf weggezogen.
Seit zehn Jahren spiele ich Klavier. Vor zehn Jahren habe ich angefangen.

Every pair is a seit-statement (ongoing) plus its mirror vor-statement (the originating event). Drilling them together cements the contrast.

Damals = "back then" / "in those days" — the adverbial counterpart to jetzt. Used to introduce reminiscence. Damals war alles anders.
Plural -en on years. seit/vor 5 Jahren (NOT 5 Jahre) — seit and vor take Dat., and the Dativ-Plural ending -n is mandatory on the noun. einem (m./n. Dat.) / einer (f. Dat.) / zwei, drei … Jahren.

ab vs. bis — the future-endpoint pair

Page 9 introduces both prepositions side-by-side, exactly mirrored on the timeline:

Ich wohne ab nächstem Monat in München.
Ich muss bis morgen meine Koffer packen.
PrepositionCaseWhat it marksVisual
ab+ Dat.the Anfangspunkt (starting point) of a future actionNOW──●─────X─────►
bis+ Akk.the Endpunkt (end point) of a future actionNOW─────X─────►(stop)

The mental model

  • ab answers Ab wann? — "From when?" — and gives the start of something that wasn't true before.
  • bis answers Bis wann? — "Until when?" — and gives the end of something that is ongoing.

The two together can describe a whole future interval: Ich bin ab Montag bis Freitag im Urlaub. (I'm on holiday from Monday through Friday.)

Case warning — bis is the outlier

Of the five temporal prepositions in this lesson, *only bis takes Akkusativ. The other four (seit, vor, ab, nach*) are all Dat. Be especially careful in combination:

  • bis einem Tag ❌ — wrong (Dat. ending)
  • bis einen Tag ✅ — correct (m.Akk. ending)
  • bis nächsten Monat ✅ (m.Akk.)
  • ab nächstem Monat ✅ (m.Dat.)

In practice many time phrases after bis are bare (no article): bis morgen, bis 10 Uhr, bis Montag, bis Weihnachten — no case ending visible. The Akk. shows up most often after bis zum (= bis zu dem) for greater precision: bis zum 24. Dezember (Dat. after zu).

Page 10 — Ab oder bis? (Ergänze die passende Präposition)

#SentenceAnswer
1Pia arbeitet _____ nächster Woche im Büro.ab (starting from next week)
2Olaf ist noch _____ nächste Woche im Urlaub.bis (still on holiday until next week)
3Eric muss _____ Weihnachten arbeiten.bis (until Christmas)
4Ich mache _____ morgen Diät.ab (starting tomorrow)
5Wir müssen _____ Ende Juli aus der Wohnung ausziehen.bis (by end of July)

(Lösungen page 24: 1.ab; 2.bis; 3.bis; 4.ab; 5.bis)

Sub-vocab:
| Wort | English |
|------|---------|
| das Büro, -s | office |
| der Urlaub, -e | vacation, holiday |
| Weihnachten | Christmas (usually used without article in everyday phrases) |
| die Diät, -en | diet — Diät machen = to be on a diet |
| ausziehen aus + Dat. (sep., zog aus, ausgezogen; sein) | to move out of (callback from 1051V) |

Page 11 — Was fehlt? (Julia in Berlin)

Julia wohnt seit zwei Jahren in Berlin. Aber jetzt braucht sie eine neue Wohnung. Sie hat vor zwei Tagen eine neue Wohnung gefunden. Die Wohnung gefällt ihr sehr gut. Sie muss noch bis nächste Woche warten. Dann kann sie aus der alten Wohnung ausziehen. Ab nächstem Monat wird sie dann in der neuen Wohnung wohnen.

(Lösungen page 24: seit zwei Jahren; vor zwei Tagen; bis nächste Woche; Ab nächstem Monat)

Notice the four prepositions in one paragraph — same Russian-doll structure as Lotta's reading:
- seit zwei Jahren — current status
- vor zwei Tagen — recent completed event
- bis nächste Woche — future endpoint of waiting
- ab nächstem Monat — future onset of new arrangement
Julia's mini-story is the lesson's neatest summary card. Memorize it.
Watch the future tense in the last sentence: Ab nächstem Monat wird sie dann in der neuen Wohnung wohnen. Futur I = werden + Inf. — same construction that surfaced in 1071V (Ich werde ihr Münster zeigen). Stays in V2 with the infinitive at the end. Often optional in German — Präsens + future time expression also works (Ab nächstem Monat wohne ich in der neuen Wohnung).

Page 12 — Laufbahn: Alexa's career timeline

Was hat Alexa in ihrem Beruf bisher gemacht und was macht sie jetzt?
JahrPosition
1998Kellnerin
2004Assistentin
2010Managerin
heuteManagerin

Speaking template using all five prepositions:

Alexa hat ihre Karriere vor vielen Jahren als Kellnerin angefangen. Seit 1998 arbeitet sie. Von 1998 bis 2004 war sie Kellnerin. Nach sechs Jahren, also 2004, ist sie Assistentin geworden. Vor 16 Jahren, im Jahr 2010, wurde sie Managerin. Seit 2010 ist sie Managerin und macht das immer noch heute.
die Laufbahn, -en (f.) = career path. Slightly more formal than die Karriere, -n (career). Used especially in HR contexts and résumés.
bisher = so far, up till now. Was hat Alexa bisher gemacht? The natural counterpart to seit — both look backward from a present anchor.
als + Beruf (no article) = "as a [profession]." Sie arbeitet als Kellnerin. / Vor 20 Jahren hat sie als Assistentin angefangen. A standard A2 frame for describing what someone does/did for work.

nach — the versatile post-X preposition

Page 13 finally introduces the fifth temporal preposition. Nach is more flexible than the others because it can attach to three different kinds of complement:

Nach Weihnachten fährt er in den Urlaub.
Wir essen nach der Arbeit im Restaurant.
Sie ist nach zwei Jahren in Spanien zurück nach Portugal gekommen.
Nach steht mit einem Zeitpunkt, einer Zeitspanne oder einem Vorgang. Die Präposition nach steht mit dem Dativ.

The three uses

Type of complementExampleEnglish
Zeitpunkt (point in time)Nach Weihnachten fährt er in den Urlaub. After Christmas, he goes on holiday.
Zeitspanne (duration)Sie ist nach zwei Jahren zurückgekommen. She came back after two years.
Vorgang (event/process — usually a noun derived from a verb)Wir essen nach der Arbeit. / Nach dem Aufstehen trinke ich Kaffee. After work / after waking up.

Watch out for spatial nach

nach has another major sense — the spatial one, "to/toward" with cities, countries, and direction adverbs. The two senses are entirely separate and don't overlap:

SenseExample
temporal nach (this lesson)nach der Arbeit (after work)
spatial nach (from 1023G)nach Berlin (to Berlin), nach Hause (homeward)

Both take Dat. The complement type disambiguates: an event/time → temporal; a place → spatial.

Page 14 — Was machst du nach …? (pair speaking)

Word bank (each in the correct Dat. form already): Ostern · dem Einkaufen · deinem Geburtstag · der Arbeit · Weihnachten · dem Aufstehen · der Schule · dem Urlaub · Feierabend.

Frame from the lesson:

A: Was machst du nach Ostern?
B: Nach Ostern verreise ich mit meiner Familie.

Vocabulary the prompts assume:

WortEnglishNote
OsternEasterusually without article in everyday use
WeihnachtenChristmasusually without article
Feierabendend-of-workday timecallback from 1031V
das Aufstehenthe waking upnominalized infinitive — always neuter + Sg. + capitalized
das Einkaufenthe shoppingnominalized infinitive
der Geburtstag, -ebirthdaycallback from A1
der Urlaub, -evacationcallback
verreisen (insep., weak; sein)to go away on a tripIch verreise mit meiner Familie.
Nominalized infinitives — das Aufstehen, das Einkaufen, das Schwimmen — convert any verb into a neuter Sg. noun by capitalizing the infinitive. Always neuter. Common with nach + Dat. because actions are natural complements: nach dem Aufstehen, nach dem Mittagessen, nach dem Spazieren.

Page 15 — Welche Präposition passt? (all five mixed)

The lesson's biggest single drill — chooses among bis / seit / nach / ab / vor for each sentence:

#SentenceChoicesAnswerWhy
1Timo geht _____ der Schule zum Arzt.a. bis b. seit c. nach d. abc. nachafter school (Vorgang/event)
2Anton lernt _____ zwei Jahren Deutsch.a. ab b. bis c. vor d. seitd. seitongoing learning
3Sabine ist _____ zwei Monaten nach Österreich gekommen.a. seit b. ab c. vor d. bisc. vorcompleted arrival 2 months ago
4Ich habe heute _____ 10 Uhr geschlafen, danach musste ich arbeiten.a. bis b. seit c. nach d. vora. bisendpoint of sleeping at 10
5Joshua hat _____ nächster Woche einen neuen Job.a. seit b. ab c. vor d. nachb. abstarting from next week

(Lösungen page 24: 1c; 2d; 3c; 4a; 5b)

This is the diagnostic question of the lesson — if you can do this exercise cleanly, you've grasped the system.

A 9-tile grid of time phrases. Pick one, build a question:

PhraseSample question

ab morgenWas machst du ab morgen?
nach der ArbeitWas machst du nach der Arbeit?
vor zehn JahrenWas hast du vor zehn Jahren gemacht? (note: Perfekt for completed past)
ab nächstem MonatWas machst du ab nächstem Monat?
Verb-tense pairing:
| Preposition | Typical tense |
|-------------|---------------|
| seit | Präsens (ongoing) |
| vor | Perfekt or Präteritum (completed) |
| ab | Präsens or Futur I (future) |
| bis | Präsens, Modal + Inf., or Futur I |
| nach | matches the time perspective (often Präsens or Futur I) |
Mistaking seit + Perfekt is the single most common A2 error — keep seit paired with Präsens.

Page 17 — Dialog (free roleplay)

Two roles, both armed with temporal-preposition questions:

Rolle A: Frage über Familie, Feiertage, Hobbys etc. — Seit wann glaubst du nicht mehr an den Weihnachtsmann?
Rolle B: Frage über Wohnung, Arbeit, Urlaub etc. — Ab wann hast du Urlaub?

The prompt says: Die Fragen dürfen lustig oder ernst sein — the questions may be funny or serious.

Useful question frames:

FrameEnglish
Seit wann …?Since when …? / How long have you been …?
Seit wie lange …?For how long …?
Ab wann …?From when …?
Bis wann …?Until when …?
Wie lange noch …?For how much longer …?
Wann hast du zuletzt …?When did you last …?
Was hast du vor … Jahren gemacht? What did you do … years ago?
Was machst du nach …?What will you do after …?
an + Akk. glauben = to believe in. Glaubst du an den Weihnachtsmann? (Do you believe in Santa Claus?) Fixed-prep verb — see 1043G for the family.
der Weihnachtsmann = Father Christmas / Santa Claus. In Catholic regions (south & west) children also receive presents from das Christkind (the Christ child). Northern/Protestant regions and the secular default: Weihnachtsmann. The folkloric Nikolaus (Dec 6) is separate.

#QuestionCueAnswer
1Bis wann hast du Urlaub?(nächster Montag)Ich habe bis nächsten Montag Urlaub. (given)
2Bis wann musst du arbeiten?(18 Uhr)Ich muss bis 18:00 Uhr arbeiten.
3Ab wann hast du Zeit?(morgen)Ich habe ab morgen Zeit.
4Ab wann studierst du?(Oktober)Ich studiere ab Oktober.
5Bis wann müssen wir uns entscheiden?(24. Dezember)Wir müssen uns bis (zum) 24. Dezember entscheiden.
6Ab wann hast du heute Feierabend?(17:00 Uhr)Ich habe ab 17:00 Uhr Feierabend.

(Lösungen page 24: 2. bis 18:00 Uhr; 3. ab morgen; 4. ab Oktober; 5. bis (zum) 24. Dezember; 6. ab 17:00 Uhr)

Bis + bare date vs. bis zum + Dat.:
- bis 18:00 Uhr / bis morgen / bis Montag — bare, no article needed.
- bis zum 24. Dezember / bis zum Wochenende — when you want to be precise with a specific day-of-month or to add emphasis, bis zum (= bis zu dem) is more natural. zu is always-Dat., so the date ordinal takes weak -en (den 24. → dem 24.n). Both forms are correct; bis (zum) 24. Dezember is the lesson's notation showing either works.
uns entscheiden = to decide (reflexive). The full verb is sich entscheiden für + Akk. (to decide on) or sich entscheiden zu + Inf. (to decide to do). Already met in the Lotta reading: Sie hat sich dazu entschieden, nach Hamburg zu ziehen.

So sagt man das! — kurz vor knapp (recap)

kurz vor knapp — at the very last moment, with no time to spare
Ja, aber nur 30 Minuten vor der Deadline. Das war echt kurz vor knapp! (page 7)

The rhyming-pair idiom (kurz/knapp) names the situation of finishing something almost too late. Sister phrases:

PhraseEnglish
kurz vor knappat the very last moment
in letzter Minuteat the last minute
auf den letzten Drückerat the eleventh hour (colloq.)
mit Müh und Notbarely, with great effort

Redewendung — bis zum Gehtnichtmehr

bis zum Gehtnichtmehr (page 19)
Bedeutung: Man muss etwas viel zu oft machen. — to excess, ad nauseam, until you can't take it anymore.
Beispiel: Als Kind musste ich Klavier üben bis zum Gehtnichtmehr. Heute hasse ich Klavier spielen.

The phrase literally compresses bis zum + a frozen nominalization of "Geht nicht mehr" (it doesn't go anymore / I can't anymore). The whole thing is treated as a single masculine noun (der Gehtnichtmehr) and stuck in Dat. after bis zum.

It's a particularly German construction — colloquial, very common in spoken language, and a delightful example of German's compound-word humor. Use it for anything you had to do too much of:

  • Wir haben bis zum Gehtnichtmehr geübt. — We rehearsed until we couldn't anymore.
  • Sie hat das Lied bis zum Gehtnichtmehr gehört. — She listened to that song to death.
  • Ich habe in der Schule Vokabeln bis zum Gehtnichtmehr gelernt. — I learned vocabulary at school until I was sick of it.
Grammar peek: Gehtnichtmehr shows the productive German pattern of nominalizing a whole sentence as a noun. Same mechanism behind das Vergissmeinnicht (forget-me-not flower), das Stelldichein (rendezvous, lit. "place yourself here"), der Rausschmeißer (bouncer, lit. "throw-er-out"). German loves these — when in doubt, capitalize and add an article.

Lexical distinctions (the A2 traps surfaced by this lesson)

PairDistinction
seit vs. vorseit = ongoing, action started in past and continues now → Präsens. vor = completed, action finished in the past → Perfekt or Präteritum. Same time span, opposite verb tense.
seit + Präsens (NOT Perfekt)English "I have lived here for two years" maps to German Ich wohne hier seit zwei Jahren (Präsens), NOT Ich habe gewohnt. German treats the situation as a present-tense state. The single most common A2 mistake with seit.
vor (time) vs. vor (event)vor zwei Tagen = two days ago (time-span = "ago"). vor dem Unterricht = before class (event = "before"). Same Dat., context disambiguates.
temporal vor (Dat. always) vs. spatial vor (Wechselpräp.)Time vor + Dat. always Dat. (vor zwei Jahren, vor Weihnachten). Spatial vor takes Dat. for Wo? (vor dem Haus) and Akk. for Wohin? (vor das Haus).
temporal nach (Dat.) vs. spatial nach (Dat.)Temporal nach + Dat. with time/event (nach der Arbeit). Spatial nach + Dat. with cities/countries (nach Berlin, nach Hause). Both Dat.; complement type disambiguates.
ab (start) vs. bis (end)ab = future onset, things start. bis = future endpoint, things end. Often used together: ab Montag bis Freitag.
ab (Dat.) vs. bis (Akk.)The case distinction is the easy-to-mix-up part. ab nächstem Monat (Dat.) vs. bis nächsten Monat (Akk.).
bis vs. bis zumbis morgen / bis Montag = bare, casual. bis zum 24. Dezember / bis zum Wochenende = with article via zu (Dat.), more precise/formal. Both correct.
nach (Zeitpunkt / Zeitspanne / Vorgang)Three valid complement types for nach. Nach Weihnachten (point), nach zwei Jahren (span), nach der Arbeit (event). All Dat.
Weihnachten/Ostern (no article) vs. die Arbeit (with article)Holiday/festival names usually go without article in time phrases: nach Weihnachten, nach Ostern, vor Silvester. Other event nouns take their article: nach der Arbeit, nach dem Unterricht.
abgeben vs. einreichenBoth = "submit." abgeben (sep.) = everyday (homework, coat at cloakroom). einreichen (sep.) = formal (thesis, official paperwork).
die Karriere vs. die LaufbahnKarriere = general career, more common in spoken German. Laufbahn = formal/written; preferred for HR, résumés, official biographies.
das Master-Studium vs. die MasterarbeitMaster-Studium = the whole degree program. Masterarbeit = the final thesis. Submit the Masterarbeit, complete the Master-Studium.
Plural -n on years after seit/vorseit/vor zwei Jahren (Dat. plural mandatory -n). Same goes for seit zwei Wochen, seit drei Monaten. The naked Jahre form is wrong.
nominalized infinitivesdas Aufstehen, das Einkaufen, das Mittagessen, das Schwimmen — always neuter + Sg. + capitalized. Common after nach + Dat.
Gehtnichtmehr-style sentence nominalizationGerman pattern: nominalize a whole short phrase as a single noun. bis zum Gehtnichtmehr (until "I can't go anymore"), das Vergissmeinnicht (forget-me-not flower), das Stelldichein (rendezvous). Capitalize + add article.

Connections

  • Akkusativ- und Dativ-Präpositionen () — introduced seit, ab, nach as always-Dat. and bis as always-Akk. in their generic forms; this lesson zooms in on the temporal sense
  • Über die Wohnung reden () — first surfaced the time-question paradigm (Wann? → vor + Dat., Wie lange? → seit + Dat., Bis wann? → bis, Ab wann? → ab + Dat., Wann? + date → am + Dat.) through the Marinas neue Wohnung reading; this 1062X lesson is the systematic grammar version, adding nach and the formal rule boxes
  • Einziehen und ausziehen () — the ziehen-family used in Lotta's reading (nach Hamburg gezogen) and Julia's (ausziehen, einziehen); the housing-arc context that explains why this Kommunikation lesson sits in housing/
  • Mein Zuhause () — the 1061V/1062X pair is the V/X partnership for the second 106x slot (vocabulary + Kommunikation)
  • Die Steigerung der Adjektive () — nächst- (the inflected form of nah → näher → am nächsten) appears in ab nächstem Monat / bis nächste Woche; nächst- is the attributive Superlativ form of nah, peek at attributive endings
  • Verben mit Präpositionalobjekten () — an + Akk. glauben (in the Weihnachtsmann roleplay), sich entscheiden für + Akk. (in Lotta's reading) — fixed-prep verbs reinforced
  • Höflichkeit () — the Ich würde gern + Inf. polite-wish frame fits naturally with future-onset ab + Dat.: Ab nächstem Monat würde ich gerne …
  • Word Order — temporal phrases in V2 sentences typically occupy the Vorfeld for topic emphasis: Seit zwei Jahren wohne ich hier / Ab nächstem Monat wird sie umziehen; verb stays V2
  • Cases — the Dativ / Akkusativ split is the key case fact of this lesson; bis is the only Akk. preposition in the temporal-five
