Lesson: Relativpronomen — Relative Pronouns (Nominativ + Akkusativ)
tags: #german #lessons #a2 #grammar #housing #relativpronomen #nebensatz
summary: Grammatik — the canonical A2 grammar lesson on relative pronouns (Relativpronomen) introducing relative clauses (Relativsätze). Two tables learned together: Nominativ (der / die / das / die — identical to definite articles) and Akkusativ (den / die / das / die — same as Nom. except masculine der → den). Word order: comma before, verb at the end of the Relativsatz. The Relativsatz describes a Bezugswort (antecedent noun) in the Hauptsatz, and the relative pronoun's gender + number match the Bezugswort while its case is determined by the role inside the Relativsatz. Drilled with housing-themed examples (Apfelbaum, Wohnung, Möbel, Vermieter, Miete, Kaution, Balkon) consistent with the 106x cluster placement next to Mein Zuhause. So sagt man das! phrase gut geschnitten (well laid out — of an apartment). Redewendung Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht (barking dogs don't bite) — itself contains the lesson's grammar in miniature.
Lernziele
- Ich kann die Relativpronomen im Nominativ und Akkusativ nennen und unterscheiden.
(I can name and distinguish the relative pronouns in Nominative and Accusative.)
- Ich kann die Relativpronomen anwenden.
(I can use the relative pronouns.)
The lesson's anchor — both cases in one sentence
Page 3 introduces the whole grammar in two sentences. The same noun (Apfelbaum) appears as the Bezugswort in both a Nominativ and an Akkusativ Relativsatz:
Siehst du den großen Apfelbaum, der im Garten steht? Das ist der Baum, den meine Eltern für mich gepflanzt haben.
(Do you see the big apple tree that is standing in the garden? That's the tree that my parents planted for me.)
Read it as a side-by-side demonstration:
| Pronoun | Case | Why this case | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| der | Nominativ | the tree is the subject of steht (stands) | "that [stands]" |
| den | Akkusativ | the tree is the direct object of gepflanzt haben (planted) | "that [my parents planted]" |
The two-rule summary that the entire lesson teaches:
1. Gender + number of the relative pronoun = Bezugswort (here both Apfelbaum = masculine singular).
2. Case of the relative pronoun = the role the pronoun plays inside the Relativsatz (subject → Nom., direct object → Akk.).
Part 1 — Relativpronomen im Nominativ
Relativpronomen leiten einen Nebensatz ein. Der Nebensatz heißt Relativsatz. Er beschreibt ein Nomen, das Bezugswort, genauer.
(Relative pronouns introduce a subordinate clause. The subordinate clause is called a relative clause. It describes a noun, the antecedent, more precisely.)
The Nominativ table — identical to definite articles
| Genus | Bezugswort example | Relativpronomen Nom. |
|---|---|---|
| Maskulinum | der Mann (the man) | der |
| Femininum | die Frau (the woman) | die |
| Neutrum | das Kind (the child) | das |
| Plural (all genders) | die Kinder (the children) | die |
The cheat: Nominativ relative pronouns are identical to the definite article of the Bezugswort. The forms der / die / das / die match the article system you already know. No new endings to memorize.
Two mechanical rules for the Relativsatz
- Comma before the Relativsatz — mandatory (like all Nebensätze; same rule from 1072X).
- Verb at the end of the Relativsatz — the conjugated verb moves to the very last position.
The four anchor examples (page 4) with translations
| Bezugswort | Sentence | English |
|---|---|---|
| der Mann | Der Mann, der dort sitzt, heißt Fritz. | The man who is sitting there is called Fritz. |
| die Frau | Die Frau, die an der Kasse arbeitet, ist nett. | The woman who works at the cash register is nice. |
| das Kind | Das Kind, das mit dem Ball spielt, hat viele Freunde. | The child who is playing with the ball has many friends. |
| die Kinder | Die Kinder, die in die Schule gehen, lernen viel. | The children who go to school learn a lot. |
The English mapping is consistent: German Nominativ relative pronouns translate to "who" (for people) or "that / which" (for things). Unlike English, German cannot drop the relative pronoun — Der Baum, ich gepflanzt habe is ungrammatical. (English happily drops it: "The tree I planted.")
Lösung from page 24: Nominativ relative pronouns and the article of the noun are gleich (the same). The verb stands am Ende des Relativsatzes (at the end of the relative clause).
Page 5 — Relativsätze bilden (matching task)
Combine the Bezugswort with the matching Relativsatz and main-clause completion. All housing-themed:
| Sentence | English |
|---|---|
| Die beiden Kinderzimmer, die im ersten Stock liegen, haben einen Balkon. | The two children's rooms, which are on the first floor, have a balcony. |
| Das blaue Sofa, das im Wohnzimmer steht, ist sehr bequem. | The blue sofa, which is in the living room, is very comfortable. |
| Der Teppich, der im Schlafzimmer liegt, hat ein schönes Muster. | The carpet, which is in the bedroom, has a nice pattern. |
| Die Lampe, die an der Decke hängt, funktioniert nicht. | The lamp, which hangs from the ceiling, isn't working. |
(Lösungen page 24: as above)
The four position verbs stehen / liegen / hängen / sitzen (introduced in 1033G Wechselpräpositionen) reappear heavily — every Relativsatz on page 5 uses one of them to describe an object's location.
Page 6 — Was passt? (multiple choice Nominativ)
Pick the correct relative pronoun (der / die / das):
| # | Sentence | Answer | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Der Flur, _____ die Räume verbindet, ist lang. | der | The hallway, which connects the rooms, is long. |
| 2 | Das Haus, _____ einen großen Garten hat, steht zum Verkauf. | das | The house, which has a big garden, is for sale. |
| 3 | Die Möbel, _____ in meiner alten Wohnung waren, passen nicht in die neue. | die | The furniture that was in my old apartment doesn't fit in the new one. |
| 4 | Das Badezimmer, _____ im ersten Stock liegt, hat eine Badewanne. | das | The bathroom, which is on the first floor, has a bathtub. |
| 5 | Die Einbauküche, _____ schon im Haus ist, ist fast neu. | die | The built-in kitchen, which is already in the house, is almost new. |
| 6 | Unser Vermieter, _____ auch mit im Haus wohnt, ist sehr nett. | der | Our landlord, who also lives in the house, is very nice. |
(Lösungen page 24: 1.der; 2.das; 3.die; 4.das; 5.die; 6.der)
Page 7 — Sätze umformulieren (transformation)
Combine two simple sentences into one with a Relativsatz:
| # | Two sentences | Combined |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Die Miete steigt jedes Jahr. Sie ist sehr hoch. | Die Miete, die sehr hoch ist, steigt jedes Jahr. — The rent, which is very high, rises every year. |
| 2 | Der Kleiderschrank hat drei Türen. Er steht im Schlafzimmer. | Der Kleiderschrank, der im Schlafzimmer steht, hat drei Türen. — The wardrobe, which is in the bedroom, has three doors. |
| 3 | Das Fenster ist rund. Es zeigt zum Garten. | Das Fenster, das zum Garten zeigt, ist rund. — The window, which faces the garden, is round. |
| 4 | Die Küche hat eine Terrasse. Die Küche liegt im Erdgeschoss. | Die Küche, die im Erdgeschoss liegt, hat eine Terrasse. — The kitchen, which is on the ground floor, has a terrace. |
| 5 | Die Regale sind noch leer. Sie stehen im Arbeitszimmer. | Die Regale, die im Arbeitszimmer stehen, sind noch leer. — The shelves, which are in the study, are still empty. |
(Lösungen page 24: as above)
Part 2 — Relativpronomen im Akkusativ
Die Relativpronomen im Akkusativ und die Artikel im Akkusativ sind identisch mit den Relativpronomen im Nominativ. Ausnahme: der wird zu den.
Wir brauchen ein Relativpronomen im Akkusativ, wenn das Relativpronomen das direkte Objekt im Nebensatz ist.
(The Accusative relative pronouns and the Accusative articles are identical to the Nominative relative pronouns. Exception: der becomes den. We need an Accusative relative pronoun when the relative pronoun is the direct object in the subordinate clause.)
The Akkusativ table
| Genus | Bezugswort | Nom. → Akk. | The shift |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maskulinum | der Mann | der → den | CHANGES |
| Femininum | die Frau | die → die | no change |
| Neutrum | das Kind | das → das | no change |
| Plural | die Kinder | die → die | no change |
The one rule to memorize: der → den in Akkusativ. Everything else stays the same. This mirrors the regular definite-article system — der Mann sieht den Hund (Nom. → Akk. shift on m. only).
How to spot which case you need
Pull the Relativsatz out as a standalone sentence. If the Bezugswort would be the subject → Nominativ. If it would be the direct object → Akkusativ.
| Hauptsatz | Pronoun in Hauptsatz | Case |
|---|---|---|
| Ich kenne ihn nicht. | ihn (m. Akk.) | → relative pronoun den |
| Wir suchen sie. | sie (f. Akk.) | → relative pronoun die |
| Der Arzt untersucht es. | es (n. Akk.) | → relative pronoun das |
| Wir grüßen sie. | sie (Pl. Akk.) | → relative pronoun die |
The pronoun in the Hauptsatz (ihn / sie / es) is a direct clue — wherever a personal pronoun would go in Akk., a relative pronoun in Akk. takes the same role.
The four anchor examples (page 9)
| Two Hauptsätze | Combined Relativsatz | English |
|---|---|---|
| Der Mann winkt mir zu. Ich kenne ihn nicht. | Der Mann, den ich nicht kenne, winkt mir zu. | The man whom I don't know is waving at me. |
| Die Frau hat blonde Haare. Wir suchen sie. | Die Frau, die wir suchen, hat blonde Haare. | The woman whom we're looking for has blonde hair. |
| Das Kind hat Fieber. Der Arzt untersucht es. | Das Kind, das der Arzt untersucht, hat Fieber. | The child whom the doctor is examining has a fever. |
| Die Leute sind unsere Nachbarn. Wir grüßen sie. | Die Leute, die wir grüßen, sind unsere Nachbarn. | The people whom we greet are our neighbors. |
Word order in the Akkusativ Relativsatz
When the relative pronoun is the object, a new subject appears inside the Relativsatz (ich / wir / der Arzt). The word order then is:
[Relativpronoun] + [Subject] + [middle field] + [Verb at the end]
Examples:
- …, den ich nicht kenne**. — Akk.-pronoun + subject ich + verb-final kenne.
- …, die der Arzt untersucht**. — Akk.-pronoun + subject der Arzt + verb-final untersucht.
This is the first time at A2 you produce a Nebensatz with both a relative pronoun AND a separate subject — a small but important structural step.
Page 10 — Was passt zusammen? (matching)

| 2 | Der Vermieter, | b | den ich heute Morgen angerufen habe, hat mir mehr Details genannt. | The landlord whom I called this morning gave me more details. |
| 3 | Das Haus, | d | das wir kaufen wollen, hat vier Zimmer. | The house that we want to buy has four rooms. |
| 4 | Die alten Schränke, | a | die wir restauriert haben, sehen jetzt wieder gut aus. | The old cabinets that we restored look good again now. |

Page 11 — Was passt? (Akkusativ cloze)
Insert the correct Akkusativ relative pronoun:
| # | Sentence | Answer | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | In dem Garten, _____ wir gepachtet haben, gibt es viele Obstbäume. | den | In the garden that we leased, there are many fruit trees. |
| 2 | Die Möbel, _____ wir letzte Woche gekauft haben, waren sehr teuer. | die | The furniture that we bought last week was very expensive. |

| 6 | Von dem Balkon, _____ wir oft nutzen, hat man eine gute Aussicht. | den | From the balcony that we often use, you have a good view. |
(Lösungen page 24: den; die; die; das; die; den)
Page 12 — Sätze umformulieren (Akkusativ transformation)
| # | Two sentences | Combined |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Der Schuhschrank steht im Flur. Wir haben ihn selbst gebaut. | Der Schuhschrank, den wir selbst gebaut haben, steht im Flur. — The shoe cabinet that we built ourselves is in the hallway. |
| 2 | Die Wohnung ist möbliert. Ich habe sie gemietet. | Die Wohnung, die ich gemietet habe, ist möbliert. — The apartment that I rented is furnished. |
| 3 | Das Fahrrad steht im Keller. Ich habe es repariert. | Das Fahrrad, das ich repariert habe, steht im Keller. — The bike that I repaired is in the cellar. |
(Lösungen page 24: as above; note the lesson's Lösung uses wir instead of ich on item 2, but either subject is grammatically correct)
Note on Perfekt in Relativsätze: when the verb is in Perfekt (habe gebaut, habe gemietet), the auxiliary haben/sein is the conjugated verb and goes to the end of the Nebensatz. The participle sits just before it: …, den wir selbst gebaut haben. This is the Verbalklammer (verb bracket) — same structural rule as in 1072X's dass-Nebensätze.
Page 13 — Nominativ oder Akkusativ? (the diagnostic exercise)
The pivotal mixed exercise — distinguish Nom. and Akk. on the fly:
| # | Sentence | Choices | Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Das Essen, _____ ich gekocht habe, steht auf dem Tisch. | a. das b. der c. die d. den | a. das | n.Akk. (= n.Nom.); food is direct object of kochen |
| 2 | Die Pfanne, _____ in der Küche steht, ist schon sehr alt. | a. das b. der c. die d. den | c. die | f.Nom.; pan is subject of steht |
| 3 | Der Kühlschrank, _____ wir besitzen, ist kaputt. | a. das b. der c. die d. den | d. den | m.Akk.; fridge is direct object of besitzen (the changed form!) |
| 4 | Der Umzug, _____ ich mit Freunden organisiere, findet am Sonntag statt. | a. das b. der c. die d. den | d. den | m.Akk.; move is direct object of organisieren |

- Der Tisch, der in meinem Wohnzimmer steht, … — The table that's in my living room …
- Die Lampe, die … — The lamp that …
Page 17 — Langer Satz (record-setting drill)
Wie lang wird dein Satz? Stelle einen neuen Rekord auf!
Die Küche, die ich benutze, die ich liebe, die ich sauber mache, ist groß.
(The kitchen that I use, that I love, that I clean, is big.)
Stacked Relativsätze — chain multiple Relativsätze referring to the same Bezugswort. Each one is separated by a comma; each ends with its own verb. This is the lesson's grammar at its most exuberant.
So sagt man das! — gut geschnitten
— Welche Wohnung hat dir am besten gefallen?
— Die Wohnung, die so gut geschnitten war, fand ich am besten.
Wann ist eine Wohnung für dich gut geschnitten? (page 15)
(— Which apartment did you like best? — The apartment that was so well laid out is the one I liked best. When is an apartment well laid out for you?)
Meaning
gut geschnitten literally means "well cut" (past participle of schneiden, to cut). Used of apartments and floor plans, it means well laid out / well planned / having a smart layout — the rooms flow into each other, there's no wasted space, dimensions are sensible, no awkward angles. The opposite is schlecht geschnitten.
Why this idiom matters for housing-hunting
When German rental ads and tenants describe an apartment as gut geschnitten, they're praising:
- Rooms of usable shape (rectangular, not L-shaped)
- Logical flow (kitchen near dining area, bathroom not in a far corner)
- No dead space (long narrow corridors with no purpose)
- Good light distribution
- Reasonable room-size ratios
It's high praise. Eine schöne Wohnung, gut geschnitten in an ad means the layout has been thoughtfully designed.
Sister phrases
| Phrase | English |
|---|---|
| gut geschnitten | well laid out |
| schlecht geschnitten | badly laid out |
| hell und freundlich | bright and welcoming (ad cliché) |
| praktisch geschnitten | practically laid out |
| großzügig geschnitten | generously laid out (with spacious rooms) |
Grammar callback: gut geschnitten is itself a past participle used adjectively — same construction as möbliert (from 1051V) and getrennt (from 1072X).
Redewendung — Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht.
Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht.
Bedeutung: Menschen, die verbal aggressiv sind, machen das nicht wirklich.
(Meaning: People who are verbally aggressive don't actually act on it.)
Beispiel: — Meine Nachbarin hat gesagt, bei der nächsten Party ruft sie die Polizei. — Mach dir keine Sorgen. Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht.
(— My neighbor said she'll call the police at the next party. — Don't worry. Barking dogs don't bite.)
Direct English equivalent
The proverb maps exactly to the English "His bark is worse than his bite" or "Barking dogs don't bite" — both languages share this folk wisdom about threats being noisier than the action.
The grammar inside the idiom
The proverb is the lesson's grammar in miniature:
Hunde , die bellen , beißen nicht.
↑ ↑ ↑
Bezugswort Relativsatz Hauptsatz
(Pl.) (verb at end: (main verb)
bellen)
- die = relative pronoun, Nom. Pl. (Bezugswort = Hunde, plural)
- bellen = verb at the end of the Relativsatz
- The relative pronoun and the main-clause verb (beißen nicht) sandwich the Relativsatz between commas
You can produce dozens of structurally identical Sprichwörter (proverbs) and observations using the same template:
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| X, die viel reden, … | Leute, die viel reden, sagen wenig. (People who talk a lot say little.) |
| X, die schweigen, … | Frauen, die schweigen, sind selten. (Women who stay silent are rare.) |
| X, die früh aufstehen, … | Menschen, die früh aufstehen, sind produktiv. (People who get up early are productive.) |
Useful vocab from the example
| Wort | English |
|---|---|
| bellen | to bark |
| beißen (biss, gebissen) | to bite |
| die Nachbarin, -nen | (female) neighbor |
| bei der nächsten Party | at the next party (Dat. after bei) |
| die Polizei (Sg.) | the police |
| anrufen / rufen | to call (rufen = call out; anrufen = phone) |
| sich (Dat.) Sorgen machen | to worry (reflexive Dat.) |
| Mach dir keine Sorgen! | Don't worry! (imperative + Dat. dir) |
| verbal aggressiv | verbally aggressive |
| wirklich | really, actually |

Lexical distinctions (A2 traps & nuances surfaced)
| Pair | Distinction |
|---|---|
| Nominativ vs. Akkusativ relative pronouns | Only der → den changes. All other forms (die / das / die) are identical across the two cases. The one form to memorize. |
| Relativpronomen der/die/das vs. definite article der/die/das | They look identical at A2 level (Nom./Akk.) — this is a feature, not a bug. The function is different: article precedes a noun (der Mann), relative pronoun introduces a Relativsatz (…, der). |
| Gender = Bezugswort vs. Case = role in Relativsatz | The relative pronoun's gender+number always matches the Bezugswort in the Hauptsatz. Its case is determined by its role inside the Relativsatz (subject → Nom., direct object → Akk.). Two separate decisions. |
| German cannot drop the relative pronoun vs. English can | English: "the tree I planted." German requires the pronoun: der Baum, den ich gepflanzt habe (NOT der Baum, ich gepflanzt habe). |
| dass-Nebensatz vs. Relativsatz | Both Nebensätze, both verb-final, both with comma. dass = subordinating conjunction "that" (introduces a content clause). Relative pronoun der/die/das/den = pronoun that refers back to a noun in the Hauptsatz. Different functions; same word-order rule. |
| Auxiliary placement in Perfekt Relativsatz | The conjugated auxiliary haben/sein goes to the end; the participle sits just before it: …, den wir gebaut haben. Verbalklammer = verb bracket. |
| Bezugswort with adjective | Das blaue Sofa, das im Wohnzimmer steht… — adjective sits before the noun (with proper attributive ending, here -e for weak Nom. n.), Relativsatz follows the comma. |
| Stacked Relativsätze | Multiple Relativsätze with the same Bezugswort are stacked with commas: Die Küche, die ich benutze, die ich liebe, die ich sauber mache, ist groß. |
| faul (rotten food) vs. faul (lazy person) | Same word, two distinct senses. Der Saft riecht faul = the juice smells rotten. Sie ist faul = she's lazy. Context disambiguates. |
| liegen / stehen / hängen / sitzen (Wo? + Dat. position) vs. legen / stellen / hängen / setzen (Wohin? + Akk. movement) | From 1033G. All position verbs (the first set) reappear heavily in this lesson's Relativsätze — they're the verbs of choice for describing where things are. |
| gut geschnitten vs. schlecht geschnitten | The positive/negative pair for apartment layouts. Both are past participles used adjectively (from schneiden — to cut). |
| Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht. (A1/A2 productive template) | The Sprichwort-template X, die [Verb], [Verb] nicht is extremely productive — Leute, die viel reden, sagen wenig / Menschen, die schweigen, denken oft mehr. |
| betragen vs. sein vs. ausmachen | All can be used to state amounts. betragen (formal) = "to amount to" (Die Kaution beträgt 900 Euro). sein (neutral) = "is" (Die Miete ist 800 Euro). ausmachen (informal) = "to come to." |
| pachten vs. mieten | mieten = to rent (apartments, cars, anything short-term). pachten = to lease (land, gardens, businesses — typically longer-term agricultural leases). |
