tags: #german #lessons #a2 #culture #kunst #wortschatz
summary: Wortschatz — opens the A2 Culture & Arts topic (108x) with the Kulturveranstaltungen noun set (das Theaterstück, der Film, die Eintrittskarte, der Platz in its seat sense, die Aufführung, die Veranstaltung, das Publikum, die Pause), the museum pair das Museum / die Ausstellung (with das Gemälde / die Skulptur), the going-out add-ons die Disco / sich freuen über + Akk. / anschauen / spannend, and the film-conversation frames (Welchen Film möchtest du sehen? / Ist der Platz noch frei?). So sagt man das: der Kulturbanause; Redewendung nach allen Regeln der Kunst.
Lernziele
- Ich kann den neuen Wortschatz zum Thema kulturelle Events sicher anwenden. — I can confidently use the new vocabulary on the topic of cultural events.
- Ich kann über verschiedene Kunstarten reden. — I can talk about different art forms.
The anchor text (page 3)
Was ich gern in meiner Freizeit mache? Ich liebe Kultur! Ich gehe daher gern ins Theater und ins Museum.
— What do I like doing in my free time? I love culture! That's why I like going to the theatre and to the museum.
Two things to notice:
- daher — therefore, that's why. A V2 adverb: fronted, it pushes the subject behind the verb (Ich gehe daher gern …). Sister of deshalb/deswegen.
- going-out prepositions track the noun's gender: ins Theater / ins Museum / ins Kino (all n.), in die Oper / in die Disco (f.), zum Konzert (n., but zu because you attend an event rather than enter a building — same logic as zum Fußballspiel).
Wiederholung: Freizeitaktivitäten — leisure activities (page 4)
Warm-up mind map, all known words re-filed as cultural free-time activities:
| Aktivität | English |
|---|---|
| lesen | to read |
| ins Kino gehen | to go to the cinema |
| Musik hören | to listen to music |
| tanzen gehen | to go dancing |
| die Oper | the opera |
| fotografieren | to photograph, take pictures |
| malen | to paint |
| zum Konzert gehen | to go to a/the concert |
Exercise — Was passt? (page 5, Lösungen: 1c, 2a, 3d, 4b)
| # | Bild (image) | Sentence | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | dancers under club lights | c) Beim Konzert tanzen wir auch. | At the concert we dance too. (bei + Dat. nominal frame: "at the concert") |
| 2 | man with headphones, eyes closed | a) Er hört und macht gern Musik. | He likes listening to and making music. |
| 3 | opera house balconies | d) In der Oper gibt es Sänger:innen, die auch Schauspieler:innen sind. | At the opera there are singers who are also actors. (Nom.-Plural Relativsatz from 1063G) |
| 4 | rows of cinema seats | b) Wir sollten mal wieder ins Kino gehen. | We should go to the cinema again sometime. (mal wieder — "again sometime," soft suggestion) |
der Schauspieler, - / die Schauspielerin, -nen — actor/actress: spielen + the -er/-erin agent pattern from Wortbildung, on the noun die Schau (show). The Sänger:innen colon spelling is the gender-inclusive orthography uses; in your own writing Sängerinnen und Sänger is the safe form.
Kulturveranstaltungen — the core noun set (page 6)
die Kulturveranstaltung, -en = cultural event: die Kultur + die Veranstaltung, itself a -ung noun from veranstalten (to organize/host) — deterministic Femininum per Wortbildung.
| Wort | Genus | Plural | English | Lesson example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| die Veranstaltung, -en | f. | die Veranstaltungen | event (organized) | Er muss bei der Veranstaltung eine Rede halten. — He has to give a speech at the event. |
| die Aufführung, -en | f. | die Aufführungen | performance (of a piece) | Die Aufführung beginnt um 20 Uhr. — The performance starts at 8 pm. |
| das Theaterstück, -e | n. | die Theaterstücke | (stage) play | Das Theaterstück war wirklich wunderbar. — The play was truly wonderful. |
| der Film, -e | m. | die Filme | film, movie | Hast du den Film schon gesehen? — Have you seen the film yet? |
| die Eintrittskarte, -n | f. | die Eintrittskarten | admission ticket | Ich habe mir noch Eintrittskarten online gekauft. — I bought tickets online. |
| der Platz, ¨e | m. | die Plätze | seat | Entschuldigung, ist dieser Platz noch frei? — Excuse me, is this seat still free? |
| das Publikum | n. | nur Sg. | audience | Das Publikum war ganz begeistert. — The audience was thrilled. |
| die Pause, -n | f. | die Pausen | intermission, break | Warst du schon einmal in einem Film, bei dem es eine Pause gab? — Have you ever been to a film that had an intermission? |
- die Veranstaltung vs. die Aufführung vs. die Vorstellung — three sizes of "event": Veranstaltung is the umbrella (anything organized — a lecture, a street festival, a concert); Aufführung is the performance of a piece (a play, an opera — something aufgeführt, staged); Vorstellung is one scheduled showing (the 8-pm screening). The verb behind aufführen appeared in 1071V (Heute wird Mozarts Zauberflöte in der Oper aufgeführt).
- der Platz now has three senses in your A2 stock: seat (this lesson — Ist der Platz noch frei?), ranking position (Sport treiben — auf dem ersten Platz), square/space (1052X — der Parkplatz). Context decides; the seat sense is what you need at the theatre.
- das Publikum is a collective singular-only noun (like English "the audience"): Das Publikum war begeistert, never plural. First met in Das erste Date (Im Publikum sitzen noch nicht viele Leute).
- die Pause at a cultural event = intermission (German theatres and operas always have one; long films historically did too — hence exercise question 1 on page 16).

Dialogue cloze (page 8, Lösungen: Eintrittskarten; Film)
Paulina: Hast du die Eintrittskarten für das Kino gekauft? — Did you buy the tickets for the cinema?
Jens: Noch nicht. Welchen Film möchtest du sehen? — Not yet. Which film do you want to see? (Welchen — Akk. m., the der-word endings from 1093G)
Paulina: Ich würde gern den neuen James Bond sehen. — I'd like to see the new James Bond.
Über Filme sprechen — talking about films (pages 9–10)
The three interview questions (page 9) — worth preparing answers for:
| Frage | English |
|---|---|
| Welchen Film möchtest du als Nächstes sehen? | Which film do you want to see next? |
| Welchen Film hast du zuletzt gesehen? | Which film did you see last? |
| Was ist dein Lieblingsfilm? | What is your favorite film? (Lieblings- prefix from 1071V) |
Matching — Welche Aussagen passen zu welcher Frage? (page 10, Lösungen: 1c, 2d, 3a, 4b)
| # | Frage | Antwort | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Welchen Film möchtest du sehen? | c) Ich möchte den neuen Film mit Jennifer Lawrence sehen. | Which film do you want to see? — The new film with Jennifer Lawrence. |
| 2 | Wie gefällt dir das Theaterstück? | d) Es gefällt mir gut. | How do you like the play? — I like it. (gefallen + Dat.) |
| 3 | Hast du Eintrittskarten gekauft? | a) Ja, schon vor zwei Tagen. | Did you buy tickets? — Yes, two days ago already. (vor + Dat. "ago" from 1062X) |
| 4 | Ist der Platz noch frei? | b) Nein, der Platz ist besetzt. | Is the seat still free? — No, the seat is taken. (besetzt — same word as the busy phone line in Am Telefon) |
Rollenspiel (page 11) — negotiating a theatre evening
Paulina wants to go to the theatre Friday evening and see a well-known play; Jens prefers Saturday evening so he can rest on Friday. Task: settle the day and klärt, wer die Eintrittskarten besorgt (clarify who gets the tickets). Useful frames:
Ich möchte abends ins Theater. — I'd like to go to the theatre in the evening.
Ich möchte abends lieber … — In the evening I'd rather … (lieber — the preference comparative from 1053G)
Ich besorge die Eintrittskarten. — I'll get the tickets. (besorgen = to get/procure)
So sagt man das! — der Kulturbanause (page 12)
— Shakespeare?! Nein, habe ich noch nie gehört!
— Was? Du bist so ein Kulturbanause!
— "Shakespeare?! No, never heard of him!" — "What? You're such a philistine!"
der Kulturbanause, -n, -n — a person who knows and cares nothing about culture; a philistine. The page's richtig/falsch check: Ein Kulturbanause weiß viel über Kultur → falsch — ein Kulturbanause versteht nichts von Kultur (understands nothing about culture).
- der Banause comes from Greek bánausos ("mere craftsman") — in German a person with no feeling for higher things. Compounds narrow the blind spot: der Kulturbanause, der Kunstbanause, der Musikbanause.
- n-declension: like der Mensch, der Kunde, der Planet — every case except Nom. Sg. adds -n: Sei kein Kulturbanausen? No — Nom. stays bare (Du bist ein Kulturbanause), but Ich diskutiere nicht mit einem Kulturbanausen.
- Register: teasing-to-insulting depending on tone; between friends (as on the slide) it's banter.
- versteht nichts von + Dat. — knows nothing about — the useful frame hiding in the answer key.
das Museum / die Ausstellung — the museum pair (page 13)
| Wort | Genus | Plural | English | Lesson example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| das Museum | n. | die Museen | museum | Im Museum gibt es viele Skulpturen und Gemälde. — In the museum there are many sculptures and paintings. |
| die Ausstellung, -en | f. | die Ausstellungen | exhibition | Das ist eine Kunst-Ausstellung. — That is an art exhibition. |
- Museum → Museen — the Latin -um → -en plural (Zentrum/Zentren, Datum/Daten), flagged since 1071V.
- die Ausstellung = ausstellen (to exhibit) + -ung — Femininum by rule (Wortbildung). A museum is the building; an Ausstellung is the show inside it (often temporary): Im Museum gibt es eine neue interessante Ausstellung.
- The two content nouns from the caption: das Gemälde, - (painting — from malen) and die Skulptur, -en (sculpture).
- die Kunst, ¨e — art (die Künste = the arts); the compound seen here is die Kunst-Ausstellung, and the Lernziel word is die Kunstart, -en (art form) — die Art "kind/type," exactly parallel to die Sportart from Sport treiben.
Museumsbesuch speaking prompt (page 14): In welches Museum gehst du gern und warum? — Which museum do you like going to and why? (Pictures offer the four museum types: Kunstmuseum, Naturkundemuseum — natural history, Antikensammlung — antiquities, Technikmuseum.) Answer with weil (1073G): Ich gehe gern ins Technikmuseum, weil ich Maschinen spannend finde.
Disco, sich freuen über, anschauen, spannend (pages 17–18)
The lesson's second word wave:
| Wort | Typ | English | Lesson example |
|---|---|---|---|
| die Disco, -s | f. | disco, (night)club | In der Disco tanzen alle. — In the club everyone dances. |
| sich freuen über + Akk. | v.refl. + fixed prep. | to be happy about (something present/past) | Sie freut sich über die Beförderung. — She's happy about the promotion. |
| anschauen | v.sep. | to look at, watch | Herbert und Luise schauen die Produkte an. — Herbert and Luise are looking at the products. |
| spannend | adj. | exciting, gripping | Der Film ist sehr spannend. — The film is very exciting. |
- **sich freuen über vs. sich freuen auf — the classic 1043G pair: über + Akk. for something that exists already (the promotion you just got), auf + Akk.* for something ahead (Ich freue mich auf das Konzert* — I'm looking forward to the concert).
- anschauen — separable: schaut … an. Same verb as 1074R's sich (Dat.) etwas anschauen; with the Dat. reflexive it leans "have a (proper) look at" (Ich schaue mir die Ausstellung an). Northern-German synonym: ansehen; bare schauen = gucken = to look.
- spannend — met in Sport treiben (Das Spiel ist sehr spannend); here it joins its horror-movie sibling gruselig (creepy, scary): Der Film war zu spannend und zu gruselig.
- die Beförderung, -en — promotion (at work): from befördern; the missing noun of the Die Firma employment lifecycle.

Die Kinder sind begeistert vom Film. Er ist spannend und lustig.

Redewendung — nach allen Regeln der Kunst
nach allen Regeln der Kunst
Bedeutung: regelkonform, genauso, wie es gemacht werden muss — by the rules, exactly the way it must be done.
Beispiel: Meine Physiotherapeutin hat mich gestern nach allen Regeln der Kunst massiert. Danach hatte ich zum ersten Mal seit einem Monat keine Rückenschmerzen mehr.
— My physiotherapist massaged me yesterday by every rule of the art. Afterwards, for the first time in a month, I had no more back pain.
- Origin: die Kunst here is not fine art but craft — the medieval guild sense (die Regeln der Kunst = the rules of the trade, Latin lege artis, still the standard of care formula in German medicine and law). So the idiom means "thoroughly and properly, according to professional standards" — often with a wink of completeness: jemanden nach allen Regeln der Kunst verwöhnen (to spoil someone good and proper).
- Grammar inside the idiom: nach + Dat. ("according to" — the third sense of nach beyond time and direction) + Dat.-plural allen Regeln (double -n, 1093G) + Genitiv der Kunst (of the art).
- The example's seit einem Monat + keine … mehr re-fires the 1062X seit-Präsens rule, and die Rückenschmerzen (back pain, Pl.) is the body-part-+-Schmerzen pattern (Kopfschmerzen).
