Lesson: Das Verb lassen kennenlernen

Topic: Kommunikation — the first lesson of the new 110x cluster. Tells apart the meanings of lassen, drills it as Vollverb (full verb), Hilfsverb (modal-like auxiliary + bare infinitive at the end), and reflexive causative (sich … lassen, to have something done for oneself); fixes the trickiest part — the Perfekt rule that decides between gelassen and the Ersatzinfinitiv lassen.

Lernziele (Learning goals)

  1. Ich kann die Bedeutungen des Verbs lassen unterscheiden. (I can tell apart the meanings of the verb lassen.)
  2. Ich kann das Verb lassen verwenden. (I can use the verb lassen.)

0. Opening dialogue

Mia: Lass uns heute Deutsch sprechen!
Teresa: Ja, ich lasse mein Handy in der Tasche,
und ich lasse dich nicht texten!

(Mia: Let's speak German today! / Teresa: Yes, I'll leave my phone in my bag, and I won't let you text!)

Three uses of lassen in two lines: a suggestion (Lass uns … sprechen!), lassen meaning to leave something where it is (ich lasse mein Handy in der Tasche), and lassen meaning to forbid (ich lasse dich nicht texten) — the whole lesson unpacks these three jobs plus a fourth (to stop doing something) and a fifth (the reflexive causative, §11).

1. Conjugation — Präsens

lassen is an irregular strong verb: the stem vowel shifts a → ä in the du- and er/sie/es-forms, the same pattern as fahren, schlafen, tragen.

PersonalpronomenForm von lassen
ichlasse
dulässt
er, sie, eslässt
wirlassen
ihrlasst
Sie, sielassen
Trap. du lässt and er/sie/es lässt spell identically — the pronoun is the only disambiguator.

2. Word order — Vollverb vs. Hilfsverb

lassen behaves like a modal verb (können, müssen, wollen …) in word order, whichever of its two jobs it is doing:

  • Position. lassen always sits at Position 2 of the sentence, whether it's the Vollverb or the Hilfsverb — the same rule as every finite verb in a German main clause.
  • *When lassen is the Hilfsverb, a second verb — the "possible infinitive" (der mögliche Infinitiv) — appears bare, uninflected, at the end of the sentence* (the same Satzklammer pattern as modal verbs):
SubjektVerb(rest)möglicher Infinitiv
Ichlassedich alleine.(none — Vollverb)
Julialässtdas Buch bei mir.(none — Vollverb)
Ichlassedich weiter in Ruhelesen
JohannalässtMarkus nichtarbeiten

(Ich lasse dich alleine. = I'll leave you alone. / Julia lässt das Buch bei mir. = Julia leaves the book with me. / Ich lasse dich weiter in Ruhe lesen. = I'll let you keep reading in peace. / Johanna lässt Markus nicht arbeiten. = Johanna doesn't let Markus work.)

This is the structural test for telling Vollverb lassen from Hilfsverb lassen: is there a second bare infinitive at the end of the clause? Yes → Hilfsverb. No → Vollverb.

3. The presentation dialogue — lassen under deadline pressure

Kollege 1: Lass das! Wir haben keine Zeit mehr.
Wir müssen die Präsentation so lassen, wie sie ist.
Kollege 2: Okay, ich lasse die Korrekturen sein!

(Colleague 1: Stop that! We're out of time. We have to leave the presentation as it is. / Colleague 2: Okay, I'll leave the corrections as they are!)

Three Vollverb uses in a row, all meaning "leave something alone / don't touch it further": Lass das! (stop that — an Imperativ telling someone to quit an action), die Präsentation so lassen, wie sie ist (leave the presentation as it is), die Korrekturen sein lassen (leave the corrections be — lassen + sein + Akk. is a fixed frame for "stop trying to fix/finish something").

Ask about this dialogue: Soll die andere Person noch an der Präsentation arbeiten, oder ist es okay so? (Should the other person keep working on the presentation, or is it fine as it is?) — Answer: Nein, es ist okay so. Es bedeutet: Mach nicht mehr. (No, it's fine as it is. It means: don't do any more [to it].)

4. The meanings of lassen

In practice any of these meanings can surface with either grammatical role, so the structural test in §2 is the safer anchor — but the lesson's own example pairs cluster like this:

#MeaningEnglishVollverb-BeispielHilfsverb-Beispiel
1etwas aufhören / nicht (mehr) tunto stop / quit doing somethingEr lässt das Rauchen. (He's quitting smoking.)—
2etwas nicht verändern / nicht (mit)nehmento leave something as is, or leave it behindHeute lasse ich den Schirm zu Hause. (Today I'm leaving the umbrella at home.) Ich lasse das jetzt so. (I'll leave it as it is now.)Ich lasse mein Handy zu Hause liegen. (I'll leave my phone lying at home.)
3ein Vorschlag (Lass uns … + Inf.)to suggest — "Let's …"—Lass uns einen Ausflug machen. (Let's go on a trip.)
4etwas erlauben oder verbieten (+ Akk.-Person + Inf.)to allow or forbid (someone to do something)—Ich lasse dich heute nicht fernsehen. (I won't let you watch TV today.)
The minimal pair worth noticing. Ich lasse mein Handy zu Hause. (Vollverb — no second infinitive, just "I leave my phone at home") vs. Ich lasse mein Handy zu Hause liegen. (Hilfsverb — the added bare infinitive liegen literally spells out "let it lie there"). Same real-world action, same rough translation, two different grammatical analyses — proof that the structural test in §2 (is there a second infinitive?), not the meaning, is what decides Vollverb vs. Hilfsverb.

Diagnostic drill — sort each sentence into one of three functions (vorschlagen = suggest, zurücklassen = leave behind, (nicht) erlauben = (dis)allow):

SatzFunktion
Die Lehrerin lässt mich nie lesen.(nicht) erlauben — The teacher never lets me read.
Sie lässt ihre Tasche stehen.zurücklassen — She leaves her bag [there].
Lass uns Deutsch sprechen!vorschlagen — Let's speak German!
Der Polizist lässt mich weiterfahren.erlauben — The officer lets me keep driving.
Er lässt seinen Schlüssel im Restaurant liegen.zurücklassen — He leaves his key at the restaurant [forgets it].
Ich lasse meine Kinder morgens keine Schokolade essen.verbieten — I don't let my kids eat chocolate in the morning.

5. Lass uns …! — the imperative suggestion frame

Lass uns (to one person, du-form) / Lasst uns (to several people, ihr-form) + Infinitiv at the end = "Let's …". This is lassen as Imperativ doing the Hilfsverb job (§4, meaning 3).

  • Lass uns heute Deutsch sprechen! (Let's speak German today!)
  • Lass(t) uns ein Eis essen! (Let's eat ice cream!)
  • Lass(t) uns das Haus kaufen! (Let's buy the house!)

Word-order drill — unscramble the pieces using lassen as Hilfsverb:

BausteineSatz
wir / die Kinder / draußen / spielenWir lassen die Kinder draußen spielen. (We let the kids play outside.)
uns / essen! / EisLass(t) uns Eis essen! (Let's eat ice cream!)
uns / das Haus / kaufen!Lass(t) uns das Haus kaufen! (Let's buy the house!)
der Arzt / mich / die Maske / abnehmenDer Arzt lässt mich die Maske abnehmen. (The doctor lets me take off the mask.)
ich / mein Handy / liegenIch lasse mein Handy liegen. (I leave my phone there.)

6. Fixed phrases with lassen (Vollverb, Imperativ)

PhraseEnglishBeispiel
Lass das!Stop that! / Cut it out!Lass das! Wir haben keine Zeit mehr. (Stop that! We're out of time.)
Lass gut sein.Let it be. / Leave it. / Never mind.Okay, ich lasse die Korrekturen sein! (Okay, I'll leave the corrections as they are!)

Lass gut sein tells the listener to stop working on something and accept it as it is — Es ist okay so. Mach nicht mehr. (It's fine as it is. Don't do any more.) See the full presentation dialogue in §3 for the context this phrase comes from.

7. Sprechen — Was passiert hier?

Formuliere Sätze und benutze das Verb lassen! (Form sentences and use the verb lassen!) An open speaking/writing task with four picture prompts — no fixed answer key in the lesson, so these are model sentences, not solutions:

BildModel-Satz
Eine Hand übergibt einer anderen Hand Schlüssel.Der Vermieter lässt den neuen Mieter in die Wohnung. (The landlord lets the new tenant into the apartment.)
Ein Mann geht barfuß am Strand, sein Hund läuft ohne Leine neben ihm.Er lässt seinen Hund frei am Strand laufen. (He lets his dog run free on the beach.)
Zwei Hände brechen eine Zigarette entzwei.Sie lässt das Rauchen. (She's quitting smoking.)
Eine Frau lässt bunte Luftballons in den Himmel fliegen.Sie lässt die Luftballons in den Himmel fliegen. (She lets the balloons fly up into the sky.)

8. Lassen im Perfekt — the Ersatzinfinitiv rule

The trickiest part of the lesson: *the Perfekt of lassen depends on whether it was used as Vollverb or Hilfsverb in that sentence.*

  • *Hilfsverb lassen (accompanied by another infinitive) forms the Perfekt with two infinitives: haben (konjugiert) + Verb im Infinitiv + lassen — not gelassen. This bare-infinitive-instead-of-participle pattern is called the Ersatzinfinitiv (substitute infinitive), the same mechanism modal verbs use (Ich habe gehen müssen, not ~~gemusst~~*).
  • *Vollverb lassen** (standalone, no accompanying infinitive) forms the Perfekt normally: haben* (konjugiert) + gelassen (Partizip II).
PräsensPerfektRolle
Du lässt Nina ein Eis essen. (You let Nina eat ice cream.)Du hast Nina ein Eis essen lassen.Hilfsverb → lassen
Wir lassen den Hund im Bett schlafen. (We let the dog sleep in the bed.)Wir haben den Hund im Bett schlafen lassen.Hilfsverb → lassen
Er lässt das Rauchen. (He's quitting smoking.)Er hat das Rauchen gelassen. (He quit smoking.)Vollverb → gelassen

Nils hat sein Handy zu Hause liegen ______.lassenHilfsverb + liegen (double-infinitive liegen lassen — left his phone lying at home)
Shortcut. Is there another bare verb right before lassen/gelassen? Yes → lassen (Ersatzinfinitiv). lassen is the only verb in the sentence → gelassen (Partizip II).

Diagnostic — lassen or gelassen? (Zusatzübung)

9. Was passt? — Ergänze mit lassen

Fill each gap with the correct Präsens or Perfekt form of lassen:

SatzLösung
Er ______ mich nie in Ruhe.lässt — Er lässt mich nie in Ruhe. (He never leaves me in peace.)
Ich habe meinen Schlüssel zu Hause ______.gelassen — Ich habe meinen Schlüssel zu Hause gelassen. (I left my key at home. Vollverb Perfekt.)
______ uns Pizza essen gehen!Lass(t) — Lass(t) uns Pizza essen gehen! (Let's go eat pizza!)
Laura hat die Wohnungstür offen ______.gelassen — Laura hat die Wohnungstür offen gelassen. (Laura left the apartment door open. Vollverb Perfekt.)
Am liebsten ______ Moritz alles nach Hause liefern.lässt — Am liebsten lässt Moritz alles nach Hause liefern. (Moritz would rather have everything delivered home. Hilfsverb Präsens, causative.)

10. lassen ↔ dürfen — two viewpoints, one permission

lassen (Hilfsverb, "to allow") and dürfen ("to be allowed") describe the same permission relationship from opposite sides: the person granting permission uses lassen + Akk.-Person + Infinitiv; the person receiving permission uses dürfen + Infinitiv.

dürfen (receiver's view)lassen (granter's view)
Die Kinder dürfen draußen spielen. (The kids are allowed to play outside.)Ich lasse die Kinder draußen spielen. (I let the kids play outside.)
Der Hund darf auf dem Bett schlafen. (The dog is allowed to sleep on the bed.)Ich lasse den Hund auf dem Bett schlafen. (I let the dog sleep on the bed.)
Ihr dürft ein Eis essen. (You're allowed to eat ice cream.)Ich lasse euch ein Eis essen. (I let you eat ice cream.)

Clara darf ein Spielzeug kaufen. (Clara is allowed to buy a toy.)Ich lasse Clara ein Spielzeug kaufen. (I let Clara buy a toy.)

11. sich … lassen — the reflexive causative

A fifth job for lassen, introduced through the Berühmte Personen speaking task (§13): Subjekt + lassen + sich + [Person/Sache im Dativ oder ohne] + Infinitiv = to have something done to or for oneself, or to get someone else to do something to you.

Ich glaube, die Sängerin lässt sich beim Aussteigen helfen. (I think the singer has herself helped / gets help getting out [of the car].)

This is structurally still Hilfsverb lassen (bare infinitive helfen at the end, §2's test), but the reflexive pronoun sich flips the meaning from "letting someone else do something" to "arranging for something to be done to/for oneself" — the German equivalent of the English causative "to have/get something done":

  • Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden. (I'm having my hair cut. — lit. "I let myself the hair cut.")
  • Sie lässt sich beim Umzug helfen. (She's getting help with the move.)
  • Er lässt sich das Essen liefern. (He has his food delivered.)
Two lassen + Dat., not the same thing. Don't confuse sich helfen lassen (reflexive causative — arranging help for yourself) with plain jemandem helfen lassen (allowing someone else to help a third person). The reflexive pronoun is what marks the causative reading.

12. Umschreiben — Präsens → Perfekt

PräsensPerfektRolle
Ich lasse dich alleine. (I'll leave you alone.)Ich habe dich alleine gelassen.Vollverb
Susi lässt das Rauchen. (Susi is quitting smoking.)Susi hat das Rauchen gelassen.Vollverb

Mila lässt den Hund in ihrem Bett schlafen. (Mila lets the dog sleep in her bed.)Mila hat den Hund in ihrem Bett schlafen lassen.Hilfsverb
Ihr lasst die Kinder Eis essen. (You let the kids eat ice cream.)Ihr habt die Kinder Eis essen lassen.Hilfsverb

zurücklassen (separable, zurück + lassen) is its own verb meaning "to leave behind" — the compound behind Max lässt sein Motorrad zurück and the Schlagzeilen headline below.

13. Sprechen — Die perfekte Welt & Berühmte Personen

Die perfekte Welt. Du lebst in einer perfekten Welt. Du brauchst nicht selbst zu arbeiten. Was lässt du von anderen Personen machen? Erzähle! (You live in a perfect world. You don't need to work yourself. What do you have other people do for you? Tell me!) Prompt images: Bücher vorlesen (have books read aloud), Essen kochen (have food cooked), massieren (be massaged), plus the open follow-up Was lässt du noch machen? (What else do you have done?). Model answer: In meiner perfekten Welt lasse ich mir jeden Tag Essen kochen und lasse mich jeden Abend massieren. (In my perfect world I have food cooked for me every day and have myself massaged every evening — both reflexive causative, §11.)

Berühmte Personen. Überlege dir eine berühmte Person. Was glaubst du: Was schlägt diese Person vor? Was erlaubt sie ihren Fans? Was lässt sie (nicht) sein? (Think of a famous person. What do you think: what does this person suggest? What does she allow her fans? What does she (not) let be?) Beispiel aus der Lektion: Ich glaube, die Sängerin lässt sich beim Aussteigen helfen. (I think the singer has herself helped getting out [of the car] — reflexive causative, §11.) Categories to pick from: der Präsident / die Präsidentin, ein Schauspieler / eine Schauspielerin, eine Königin / ein König in der Vergangenheit (a queen/king of the past).

14. Schlagzeilen — headline register

Newspaper headlines drop articles and auxiliaries; lassen often survives as the one finite verb holding the sentence together.

StichwörterSchlagzeile
Dummer Räuber! Dieb / Anschrift / zurückDieb lässt Anschrift zurück! (Dumb robber! Thief leaves his address behind!)
Enthüllt! Firma / Angestellte / ohne Schutz arbeitenFirma lässt Angestellte ohne Schutz arbeiten. (Revealed! Company lets employees work without protection.)
Viele Eltern / ihre Kinder / zu lange alleineViele Eltern lassen ihre Kinder zu lange alleine. (Many parents leave their kids alone for too long.)

15. Schreiben — Wenn ich 80 Jahre alt bin …

Schreibe eine Geschichte. Was lässt du von anderen Personen machen, wenn du 80 Jahre alt bist? (Write a story. What do you have other people do for you when you're 80 years old?) An open writing task pairing with §13's Die perfekte Welt — same reflexive-causative and Hilfsverb-permission structures, projected into old age. Model opening: Wenn ich 80 Jahre alt bin, lasse ich mir jeden Morgen das Frühstück ans Bett bringen und lasse meine Enkelkinder mich jeden Sonntag besuchen. (When I'm 80, I'll have breakfast brought to my bed every morning and let my grandchildren visit me every Sunday.)

16. So sagt man das! & Redewendung

So sagt man das! already covered in §6: Lass das! (Stop that!) and Lass gut sein. (Let it be.)

Redewendung — die Kuh fliegen lassen (lit. "to let the cow fly") = kräftig feiern (to party hard, celebrate wildly).

Gestern haben wir Miras Geburtstag gefeiert. Da haben wir echt die Kuh fliegen lassen. (Yesterday we celebrated Mira's birthday. We really let loose / partied hard.)
